“the lyrics are so personal that they will mean nothing to anyone but my parents and me.“
Bassist Matt Kean told to Sugarscape:
“Halfway through the writing process Jordan (Fish, keyboards) added strings and stuff to it and his little electronic bars, and then we left it for even longer and then as the last thing we wrote the vocals for it. We only finished it a week before we went to the studio, we just kept going back and tweaking it and stuff, but we were super happy with the way it came out.“

Tell your friends to sharpen their teeth
There's a few quid to be made
And my soul's a sorry state
So come on down, you empty lovers
Worms come out of the woodwork
And the snakes start to sing
Do you feel the chill
Clawing at the back of your neck?
I start to spill
Did you really think that you could fix me?
They'll sell your bones for another roll
Well, sharpen your teeth
Tell yourself that it's just business
Worms come out of the woodwork
Leeches come from out of the dirt
Rats come out of the holes they call home
And I fall apart
And the snakes start to sing
Don't say I'm better off dead
'Cause heaven's full and hell won't have me
Won't you make some room in your bed
Well, you could lock me up in your heart
And throw away the key
Won't you take me out of my head?
I'm just a would've been, could've been
Should've been, never was and never ever will be
We'll sharpen your teeth
Tell yourself that it's just business
Would've been, could've been
Should've been, never was, and never ever will be
Worms come out of the woodwork
And the snakes start to sing
Worms come out of the woodwork
Leeches come from out of the dirt
Rats come out of the holes they call home
And I fall apart
And the snakes start to sing
If you can't soar with the eagles
Then don't fly with the flock
Are you still getting high?
Did you catch your own reflection
In the knife my mother held?
Or the hell in my father's eyes?
If you can't soar with the eagles
Then don't fly with the flock
Are you still getting by?
Was I your knight in shining armor?
The apple of your eye?
Or just a step to climb?
If you can't soar with the eagles
Then don't fly with the flock.
Are you still getting high?
Did you catch your own reflection
In the knife my mother held?
Or the hell in my father's eyes?
If you can't soar with the eagles
Then don't fly with the flock
Are you still getting by?
Was I your knight in shining armor?
Or the apple of your eye?
Or just a step, a fucking step to climb
The lyrics to Bring Me the Horizon’s song “And the Snakes Start to Sing” describe a person who has lost a part of themselves and is feeling empty and broken. They refer to themselves as a “would've been, could've been, should've been, never was, and never ever will be” and ask if they were ever truly loved or just seen as an obstacle to overcome. The song speaks to feelings of betrayal and abandonment, wondering if the people who were supposed to care for the singer have turned their backs on them. It also touches on themes of greed and exploitation, with lines like “We’ll sell your bones for another roll” and “Tell yourself it's just business”. Despite the melancholy lyrics, the song has a driving beat and powerful vocals that give it an intense, almost anthemic quality.
One of the most interesting things about “And the Snakes Start to Sing” is that it doesn’t follow a traditional song structure. There’s no chorus or repeating verse, and the lyrics don’t have a clear narrative. Instead, the song is more like a series of vignettes or emotional snapshots that capture the singer’s state of mind. Another intriguing aspect of the song is the sonic atmosphere it creates. The production is moody and atmospheric, with layers of reverb and distortion that create a sense of unease and tension. The instrumentation is also unconventional, featuring elements like piano, strings, and electronica alongside the more traditional rock band setup. Perhaps most surprising of all is the sparse use of guitars, which are usually front and center in Bring Me the Horizon’s music.

I've lost the plot again
Tell your friends to sharpen their teeth
There's a few quid to be made...
And my soul's a sorry state
So come on down, you empty lovers.

And the snakes start to sing.
Do you feel the chill,

Rats come out of the holes they call home,
I fall apart.
And the snakes start to sing.
Don't say I'm better off dead,
'Cause heaven's full and hell won't have me.
Won't you make some room in your bed?
Oh, well you could lock me up in your heart,
And throw away the key.
Won't you take me out of my head?
I'm just a would've been, could've been,
Should've been, never was and never ever will be.

It says both for fucks sake
Background vocals in the first verse very clearly says "wolves". (Right after he says "empty lovers": that 100% says wolves)
Oli in the chorus clearly says worms
The line about pack animals sharpening their teeth and selling your blood for their rush doesn't work with worms: it's reflecting the wolfpack mentality drug addicts fall into when their lives are no longer their own
Both are said at different points in the song and there's points in the chorus where I'm almost entirely sure both words are layered into the backing vocals
