Tell Slater Not to Wash His Dick
Bring Me the Horizon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been away for every day and every fucking night,
I've seen your eyes, I've seen your eyes,
I've seen your eyes for every day and every fucking night,
And with every city, it gets harder

You've got a mouth like a razor-blade, it cuts so deep,
So kiss my wrists and my neck, give me eternal sleep
You say, you say, I'm only a phone call away
But for me, this distance is decay

So line my throat with lipstick, and leave my blood for flies,
I'll gurgle the blues under a sea of lies

Before you take me to the sea, let me kiss the bride
Before you take me to the sea, let me kiss the bride

Now take my body to the shore and I'll wait for the tide
Now take my body to the shore and I'll wait for the tide

I will always love you!
But I need pills to sleep
I have always failed you!
So throw away my memories

Move!

I will always love you!
But I need pills to sleep
I have always failed you!
So throw away my memories
Throw away, away

So throw away my memories
Throw them all away

Overall Meaning

The song "Tell Slater Not to Wash His Dick" by Bring Me the Horizon is an emotionally charged and dark track. The lyrics depict a protagonist who is struggling with their mental health, particularly their desire for self-harm and suicidal thoughts. The opening lines indicate that the singer has been away from home for long periods and has seen the same eyes following them everywhere (presumably a symbolic reference to their depression). They discuss how every city they visit gets harder to deal with, perhaps implying that their depression is worsening over time.

The next lines of the song contain references to self-harm and suicide. The singer describes their mouth as being like a razor blade and asks for their wrists and neck to be kissed. The mention of eternal sleep could imply that they are considering suicide as an escape from their mental torment. The next few lines reference the singer's relationship with someone else. They say that the other person is always just a phone call away, but distance is decay for them. This could suggest that the singer is struggling to maintain relationships due to their mental state.

The song's title is explained in the following lines, where the singer asks that their throat be lined with lipstick and their blood left for flies. This request refers to the old superstition that if someone leaves lipstick on a glass, then the person who drinks from it will be cursed. The song's climax comes with the repetition of the phrase "Before you take me to the sea, let me kiss the bride," which suggests a final request for the singer's death, and the line "Now take my body to the shore, and I'll wait for the tide," indicating that they are ready to be washed away by the sea.

My favorite song of theirs, the musicianship in this song is fantastic. Definitely some of their best riffs. The riffs at 0:30 (also 0:47) and 1:05 are fucking beautiful.
