The Fox and The Wolf
Bring Me the Horizon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You said you can't get to heaven unless you get high
But there's no word of hell on the way back down
You said it's now or never,
You only live once

Would you be so quick to walk over to my grave?
You said you'll never be younger than you are tonight
Now I've never felt weaker in all my life
You said it's only a one off, only a line
But now it's a circle, all of the time
Well, it's a one man cult and he's serving his line
It's a "Lust For Life" but it's a lifeless wine
He kissed her hand and then he found out her name,
It's Death and now he can't seem to wake

You can't run with the foxes and yet hunt with the wolf

Are you addicted?
Tell me the truth

I think I'm losing my mind

They say the poison's in the dosage and they must be right
Left with panic attacks and death riding our backs
It all looks so much worse on the way back down
I'm so fucked up since I hit the ground

Revive me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "The Fox and The Wolf" by Bring Me the Horizon describe the consequences of succumbing to the temptation of drugs and the effects of addiction. The song starts with a line that suggests the belief that one can only reach heaven if they are high. The irony is that while people may feel that they are on top of the world when they are under the influence of drugs, they may end up spiraling down to hell when coming off the high. The lyrics also touch upon themes of mortality and the notion that one should live life to the fullest.

The chorus of the song highlights the negative effects of drug abuse as the character speaks about feeling weaker than they have ever felt before. The verses state that what may have initially been a one-off act, such as trying a drug, can lead to an addiction, represented in the lyrics as a one-man cult. The character in the song is lured into a cycle of addiction, unable to escape the temptation to indulge in drugs.

The last line of the chorus, "You can't run with the foxes and yet hunt with the wolf," is a metaphor implying that you can't have the best of both worlds. In this particular context, it suggests that one cannot dabble in recreational drug use and also expect to live a healthy, functional life. Overall, the song serves as a warning to the dangers of drug addiction and how it can consume and destroy individuals.

My favorite BMTH song! And it features Josh Scogin (The Chariot, '68, Norma Jean)  on vocals! He's one of my favorite vocalists and favorite people!

@MrDrManPerson

same, got golden vocals.

@karenvonguten7180

Yeah but... When is he in it?

@skipdiner9972

@Karen Von Guten Second verse and he chimes in during the rest of the song. They switch on and off a lot throughout the song and it's hard to tell because they both sound super similar. It's a very subtle difference, but you can tell cause he doesn't have a british accent
