Wide Awake
Briskeby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm only human, what a lousy excuse
But we're playing a game now, I'm meant to loose
Consider me dangerous, consider us a crime
When I fall asleep now, I can't close my eyes

Wide awake, I'm wide awake and I say
I don't know how, I don't know when
I don't know how, I don't know when

it's you versus me now, just the two of us
Hard to tell the difference between hated and lost
We can't stay together, we can't stay alone
A night full of pleasure, to scream and moan

Wide awake, I'm wide awake and I say
I don't know how, I don't know when
I don't know how, I don't know when

Wide awake, I'm wide awake and I say

I don't know how, I don't know when
I don't know how, I don't know when

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Briskeby's song "Wide Awake" contain a sense of resignation and inevitability. The lyric "I'm only human, what a lousy excuse," communicates the idea that the singer is aware of their own fallibility, but also suggests a certain futility in trying to resist the situation they find themselves in. The phrase "we're playing a game now, I'm meant to lose," further underscores this sense of powerlessness, as if the singer is resigned to being at the mercy of some greater force.

The second verse introduces the idea of the song being a dialogue between two people, with the lines "it's you versus me now, just the two of us." The ambiguity of their relationship is hinted at with the lyric "hard to tell the difference between hated and lost," which could suggest a range of emotions from romantic to adversarial. The final lines of the song, "a night full of pleasure, to scream and moan," suggest a physical intimacy between the two parties involved, but with a hint of desperation or sadness.

Overall, "Wide Awake" is a song that communicates a sense of being trapped or stuck in a situation that the singer is helpless to change. The repeated refrain of "I don't know how, I don't know when" reinforces this sense of uncertainty and lack of control.

Good music is timeless, it's eternal.

I remember when living in the 90s all those good bands and songs was taken for granted. We didn't see the forest for all trees... Today it's easier when a lot of rubbish is mass-produced to prussiate older songs and realize - shit, this was good.
