Briston Maroney largely grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee. In August 2013, at age 15, Maroney tried out for the 13th season of American Idol at one of its audition bus stops in Knoxville. He was then selected to audition in front of the American Idol judges in Salt Lake City. There, he sang a version of The Rolling Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want" on an episode that aired in January 2014. The judges voted to advance him to Hollywood, where he became one of 30 semi-finalists. Maroney did not advance beyond that point.
I've Been Waiting

If I hurt you with the words, that I said
I know we had plans and now we're gonna go and change
All of them
And if it means so much now
You don't have to be so cold
And if you want it so bad
Oh I've been waiting, I've been waiting
For you all my life
Oh I've been waiting, I've been waiting
For you all my life
Oh, it builds me up
And it tears me down
To never know
What I'm feeling now
Oh, it builds me up
And it tears me down
Oh, to never know
What I'm feeling now
Oh, it builds me up
And it tears me down
Oh, to never know
What I'm feeling now
Oh, it builds me up
And it tears me down
Oh, to never know
What I'm feeling now
Oh I've been waiting, I've been waiting
For you all my life
Oh I've been waiting, I've been waiting
For you all my life
Oh I've been waiting, I've been waiting
For you all my life
Oh I've been waiting, I've been waiting
For you all my life
In "I've Been Waiting," Briston Maroney sings of an apology and a plea for forgiveness from a lover. The singer expresses regret for hurtful words that were spoken and acknowledges that their plans may need to change as a result of the rift in the relationship. The chorus repeats the title phrase, emphasizing the central theme of longing and waiting for the other person to return. The singer offers an olive branch, saying that if the person wants the relationship to work out, they should express that desire.
Throughout the song, there is a sense of inner turmoil and conflict. The verse that begins, "And if it means so much now / You don't have to be so cold" suggests that the singer feels the other person is being closed off emotionally. The repetition of the lines, "Oh, it builds me up / And it tears me down / To never know / What I'm feeling now," underscores this feeling of being torn apart by the emotional tumult of the relationship.
The song builds to a cathartic release in the final chorus, with the repeat of the title line and the thundering drumbeat. There is a sense of desperation and urgency in Maroney's voice as he calls out to the one he's been waiting for. Despite the ambiguity of the situation and the uncertain outcome of the relationship, the singer's passion and conviction shine through.

And I'm sorry baby
I apologize, my love
If I hurt you with the words, that I said
I regret any pain I may have caused with my words
I know we had plans and now we're gonna go and change
Our original plans have shifted and altered
All of them
Every plan has been affected
And if it means so much now
If it has become meaningful
You don't have to be so cold
There's no need to be distant or aloof
And if you want it so bad
If you truly desire it
Just let me know
Please communicate with me
Oh I've been waiting, I've been waiting
I have been eagerly anticipating
For you all my life
For your presence throughout my entire existence
Oh, it builds me up
It elevates and excites me
And it tears me down
Yet it also causes emotional turmoil
To never know
To not have clarity or certainty
What I'm feeling now
About my current emotions
