PROUD
Britannia High Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All of my life I have watched you climbing mountains, chasing dreams
All of my life you gave me everything, but you don't have to give the world to me

Just say you love me as I am, say you want me as I am
Say I'm someone in your eyes it's all I wanted to be
Oh just let me go I know, one day, if I'm aloud, if I'm aloud one day I'll make you proud

All of your life you've taken chances, you broke the rules time after time
All of your life you've gone your own way so give me this chance and I'll go mine

Why can't you say you love as I am, say you want me as I am
Say I'm someone in your eyes it's all I wanted to be
Oh just let me go I know, one day, if I'm aloud, if I'm aloud one day I'll make you proud
Oh one day I'll make you proud

And trying to please you now is all I seem to do
I'm holding my dreams down, it's breaking me in two
I've got to be me now
Cause there's already one of you
I'm on my knees so help me please

Please don't shoot me down cause
Though you can't see it someday I'll make you proud

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Proud" by Britannia High describes the struggle of a young person trying to achieve their dreams while dealing with the pressure and expectations from their parents. The song speaks to the idea that parents want their children to succeed, but often fail to recognize the individual qualities and aspirations of their child, instead imposing their own goals and dreams upon them. The first verse acknowledges the sacrifices and efforts made by the parents in raising their child and guiding them towards success. However, the chorus expresses the desire for the parents to accept their child for who they are, flaws and all, and to support them in pursuing their own passions.

The second verse shifts the focus to the child's perspective, as they confront their parent's reluctance to let them follow their own path and be true to themselves. The lyrics "trying to please you now is all I seem to do, I'm holding my dreams down, it's breaking me in two" convey the stress and emotional toll of constantly sacrificing one's own aspirations to meet someone else's expectations. The bridge of the song serves as a plea for understanding, for the parent to recognize the unique qualities of their child and allow them the freedom to pursue their own dreams.

Overall, "Proud" is a powerful anthem for young people struggling to find their own identity and voice in the face of parental expectations. It encourages parents to support and love their children unconditionally, even if their pursuits don't align with their own.

i feel exactly the same way as this character jez, my dad is always putting me down he couldnt care less about what i'm doing or who i am inside. he just wants me to do well at school and drums it into my head every 5 minutes. i'm never going to be good enough for him or my mum because i'm not my 19 year old sister who got staright a's. i'm not her and they need to accept this because it's hurting me.
