I Said I'm Sorry
British India Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm B-grade, underweight but excited to be here
I don't mean what I say, it's ok, please believe me

I said I'm sorry, we could shake hands on it
I said I'm sorry, we could shake hands on it

And red carpets unroll like tongues all around us
Shot down like pro-choice doctors in Texas
We make out for a while and I felt like an actor
But when we left it was light and I just felt embarrased

I said I'm sorry, we could shake hands on it (ooooh)
I said I'm sorry, we could shake hands on it (ooooh)
I said I'm sorry, we could shake hands on it (ooooh)
I said I'm sorry, we could shake hands on it (ooooh)

It used to be the only reason I breathed,
but now it's just choking me up
Don't say no, just shut up and swallow,
shut up and swallow,
I said I'm sorry

I'm B-grade underweight, out of place, dehydrated
Inhaling peroxided conversation
I've a confession to make and you're not gonna like it
I stand up and clench my fist, my life determined in fifteen minutes

I said I'm sorry, we could shake hands on it (ooooh)
I said I'm sorry, we could shake hands on it (ooooh)
I said I'm sorry, we could shake hands on it (ooooh)
I said I'm sorry, we could shake hands on it (ooooh)

I'm B-grade, underweight, but excited to be here

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of British India's song I Said I'm Sorry speak to a sense of insecurity and inadequacy. The singer of the song identifies as "B-grade, underweight" and feels out of place and dehydrated. Despite this, they are "excited to be here" and eager to make a connection with someone else. However, the singer feels like they are not being genuine ("I don't mean what I say"), and begs for forgiveness ("I said I'm sorry").

The song paints a picture of the glamor and superficiality of the entertainment industry, with "red carpets unroll[ing] like tongues" and the singer feeling like "an actor" during a make-out session. However, these experiences leave the singer feeling "embarrassed" and "choked up".

Ultimately, the song expresses a sense of longing for connection and understanding, while also acknowledging the difficulties of truly connecting with others.

The best band to come out of Melbourne in years and totally awesome everytime I've seen them live. I'm seeing them again in two days and I'm sure it'll be just as incredible, if not more... Guillotine is my favourite album of 2007. Can't wait for Thieves.
