Oh Larsen B
British Sea Power Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're fractured and cold but your heart is unbroken
My favourite foremost coastal Antarctic shelf
Oh Larsen be , oh you can fall on me
Oh Larsen be , desalinate the barren sea

Oh I, I think it's over again
Like saw blades through the air
Your winter overture
Cut through everything, and now we're not so sure
Oh Larsen be ? , oh won't you fall on me?

You had twelve thousand years and now it's all over
Five hundred billion tonnes of the purest pack ice and snow
Oh Larsen be ? , oh won't you fall on me?
Oh Larsen be ? , desalinate the barren sea

Oh I think it's the start of the end
Like saw blades through the air
Your winter overture
Cut through everything, and now we're not so sure
Oh Larsen be ? , oh fall on me
Oh Larsen be ? , oh fall on me

Oh Larsen be ? , oh Larsen be

Oh won't you fall on me?
Oh you can fall on me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of British Sea Power's song "Oh Larsen B" are a poetic lamentation about the melting of the Larsen B ice shelf in the Antarctic Peninsula, which collapsed in 2002. At the beginning of the song, the singer addresses the ice shelf itself, describing it as "fractured and cold", but with an unbroken heart, as if it were a living being. He invites it to "fall on me", as if offering comfort or shelter, and asks it to "desalinate the barren sea", perhaps alluding to the idea that the melting of the ice is contributing to rising sea levels and endangering marine life.

The chorus of the song repeats the same plea, adding a sense of urgency and desperation as the singer realizes that the end is near: "Oh I think it's over again/Like saw blades through the air/Your winter overture/Cut through everything, and now we're not so sure". The "winter overture" is presumably a metaphor for the destructive force of human activity, which is now causing irreversible damage to the planet.

Overall, "Oh Larsen B" is a poignant and melancholic reminder of the devastating impact of climate change on the natural world, and a call to action to protect what is left before it's too late.
