@Horse Man there are differences between one thing and the other. you have to understand the nuance between the two.

i am ambitious. i had an ex-cousin in law who was delusional. i aspire to be a renowned artist, and used to dream of being a world-class musician or maybe a rock star. i recognize, however, that i've only sold a handful of paintings, and only did a few really major jobs, and that i am just this side of totally unknown- i have an honest and realistic assessment of who i am, as well as what i CAN be if i follow the steps to achieve it (regardless of whether i achieve it or not). my ex-cousin thought she was actually the holy spirit, which made her feel justified in burning a puppy alive because she thought the devil had possessed it. i also came across a homeless person who said that she was once a really popular actress... i have no idea who she was, nor who the actress she spoke of was, even after a google search.

the difference between things like skepticism and ambition, vs. paranoia and delusion, is how much is grounded in reality, and how much is shit either you, or your chemically imbalanced brain, made up in your imagination without much, if any, basis in reality.

they aren't saying that shit to make you feel bad about yourself, but rather to help you to assess who you are better*, so that you can ASPIRE to be a good artist, instead of believing you are already great despite only doing stick figures... so that you can be cautious but still able to grow, instead of withdrawing into self-feeding unfounded suspicions. self-knowledge is the greatest ally in *any battle, especially when against your own psyche... we cannot see the dark spots on our face unless we look in the mirror of self-reflection to see where they are and work on cleaning them up, or ask a neutral party who isn't biased against hurting our feelings where the smudge is and how bad is it... but it's still gotta be our hands.

it is the psychiatrist's job to help you find your solutions across the hurdles of life... not to carry you across them. sometimes that takes asking how you feel about that, and seeing if your actions and your emotions line up well enough for you to be able to grow to take the next step of wiping the smudge off, seeing if you're fine with where it is, or seeing if you just want them to shut up and tell them you'll wipe it off, but really won't, because (reasons).

My fears hunt me down
Capturing my memories
The frontier of loss
They try to escape across the street where
Jesus stripped bare
And raped the spirit He was supposed to nurture
In the name of my
In the name of my

Born of a broken man, but not a broken man
Born of a broken man, never a broken man
Born of a broken man, but not a broken man
Born of a broken man, never a broken man

Like autumn leaves his sense fell from him
An empty glass of himself shattered somewhere within
His thoughts like a hundred moths
Trapped in a lampshade
Somewhere within
Their wings banging and burning
On through endless night
Forever awake he lies shaking and starving
Praying for someone to turn off the light

Born of a broken man, never a broken man
Born of a broken man, but not a broken man
Born of a broken man, never a broken man
Born of a broken man, but not a broken man

My fear is hunting me down
Capturing my memories
The frontier of loss
They try to escape across the street where
Jesus stripped bare
And raped the spirit He was supposed to nurture
In the name of my
In the name of my

Born of a broken man, but not a broken man
Born of a broken man, never a broken man
Born of a broken man, but not a broken man
Born of a broken man, never a broken man

The beauty of music is that the same lyrics can mean different things to different people. For me, this is a song of redemption. A song that I will not repeat the sins of my father.
