It's Just A Matter Of Time
Brook Benton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Someday, some way, you'll realize that you've been blind
Yes, darling, you're going to need me again
It's just a matter of time

Go on, go on, until you reach the end of the line
But I know you'll pass my way again
It's just a matter of time
After I gave you everything I had
You laughed and called me a clown
Remember, in your search for fortune and fame
What goes up must come down

I know, I know that one day you'll wake up and find

That my love was a true love
It's just a matter of time

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Brook Benton's song "It's Just a Matter of Time" express the emotions of a person who has been hurt and abandoned by their lover. The singer is lamenting about how they gave everything they had to their partner who ended up treating them badly. However, the singer is still in love with their ex-lover and believes that someday, they will realize the mistake they have made and come back to the singer. The emotions in the lyrics are powerful and relatable as many people have been in relationships that have ended abruptly or unceremoniously.

The first two lines of the lyrics express the hope the singer has that their ex-partner will realize that they have made a mistake and come back to them. The singer believes that their partner will need them again and that it's only a matter of time before that happens. The next two lines of the lyrics urge the partner to continue on their path until they reach the end of the line. The singer believes that their partner will eventually pass their way again and they will be able to reconnect and rekindle what they had before.

The third and fourth lines of the lyrics reveal the pain the singer had to endure when their partner left them. The singer gave everything they had to their partner and ended up being laughed at and called a clown. This shows how the singer's partner did not value their love and instead used them for their entertainment. The last two lines of the lyrics express the hope that the singer still has for their partner. The singer believes that one day, their ex-partner will wake up and realize that the singer's love was true and it was just a matter of time before they came back.

@1951blackbird

We have no singers today, Brook is an example of the quality of music in the 50's and 60's that cannot be compared to the junk that's pumped out today.
