Deciphering Me
Brooke Fraser Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Friend, it's getting late
We should be going
We've been sat here beneath these flickering neons for hours
while I am cracking their code, you are deciphering me
for i am a mystery, I am a locked room in a tall tower

[Chorus]
Oh can you feel the gravity falling, calling us home?
Oh, did you see the stars colliding, shining just to show we belong?
We belong.

Your telescope eyes see everything clearly
My vision is blurred but i know what i heard echoing all around
while I am tuning you in, you are deciphering me
not such a mystery, not such a faint in a far away sound

[Chorus]

It's love, it's love that holds us
We will be alright
It's truth, it's truth that shows us
If we'll walk in it's (his) light

[Repeat: x 2]
Oh can you feel the gravity falling, calling us home?
Oh, did you see the stars colliding, shining just to show we belong?

Oh can you feel the gravity falling, calling us home? (we belong)
Oh, did you see the stars colliding, shining goes to show we belong?

Overall Meaning

In Brooke Fraser's "Deciphering Me," the singer presents herself as a mystery to her friend, but one that is gradually being uncovered. While the friend is trying to understand her, she is busy cracking the code of the world around her. The lyrics describe a sense of being lost in the chaos around them, but they find comfort in each other and in the fact that they belong.

The song's chorus focuses on the idea of being called home by a force greater than them. It suggests that there is something in the universe that is drawing them together and that their love for each other is proof of this. The use of astronomy-related imagery - stars colliding, planets shifting - highlights the idea that even though they may feel small and insignificant in the grand scheme of things, they are still important and connected to the world around them. The final lines, "Oh can you feel the gravity falling, calling us home?/Oh, did you see the stars colliding, shining goes to show we belong?" emphasize the idea of belonging and feeling a sense of place in the world.

The verse that says, "Your telescope eyes see everything clearly/My vision is blurred but I know what I heard echoing all around" highlights the difference in perspectives between the two friends. While one has a clear understanding of the world around them, the other is struggling to make sense of it. However, they both have something to offer each other - one is helping the other to see clearly, while the other is providing a unique perspective and insight.
