Psychosocial
Brooke Fraser Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I love your protection but I don't love you
Your perceived perfection though it's just not true
I want an escape and tonight that's you

You are my victim, you are my muse
Just on specimen of a multitude
I wanna cliché I can click on cue
Psychosocial [x4]

Give me all access, give me what I want
The companionship of you "tableu vivants"
I'm entertained until I'm not

Psychosocial [x4]

You don't call, you don't write
It's like I don't even know you
You don't look, you never reply
And you won't cause I'm a psychosocial
It's like I don't even know you
And you won't cause I'm a psychosocial
It's like I don't even know you

It's like I don't even know you
I love your protection but I don't love you

Overall Meaning

In Brooke Fraser's song "Psychosocial," the singer explores the ambiguity of a complicated relationship, which seems to be driven by a blend of attraction and repulsion, and the desire for a temporary escape from personal turmoil. The singer admits to loving the protection of his partner, but not the partner themselves, and seeing them as a "perceived perfection" that is not realistic or sustainable. The lyrics suggest that the singer is using the partner as a "victim" to muse upon, and they are just one example of many that he has had in the past. He craves for a "cliché" to click, which may imply that he is not looking for something genuine, but something that he can easily manipulate and control.

In the second verse, the singer asks for "all access" and the "companionship of (their) tableu vivants," indicating a desire for a superficial connection with his partner. He only wants entertainment, which will eventually get monotonous and lead to disinterest. The repetition of the song's refrain, "Psychosocial," underscores the song's theme, indicating that the relationship is unhealthy, and both partners may have larger psychological issues affecting them. The song ends with the singer bemoaning the absence of attention from his partner, who is understandably wary of him.

Overall, "Psychosocial" is a reflection on the instability of romantic relationships, and the longing for a quick fix for deeper issues without putting in the necessary work.

Lyrics:

I did my time and I want out, so effusive
Fate, it doesn't cut, the soul is not so vibrant
The reckoning, the sickening
Packaging, subversion, pseudo-sacrosanct, perversion

Go drill your deserts, go dig you graves
Then fill your mouth with all the money you will save
Sinking in, getting smaller again
I'm done, it has begun, I'm not the only one

And the rain will kill us all
If we throw ourselves against the wall
But no one else can see
The preservation of the martyr in me

Psychosocial, psychosocial, psychosocial
Psychosocial, psychosocial, psychosocial

Oh, there are cracks in the road we lay
But where the temple fell, the secrets have gone mad
This is nothing new but when we killed it all
The hate was all we had

Who needs another mess, we could start over
Just look me in the eyes and say I'm wrong
Now there's only emptiness venomous insipid
I think we're done, I'm not the only one

And the rain will kill us all
If we throw ourselves against the wall
But no one else can see
The preservation of the martyr in me

Psychosocial, psychosocial, psychosocial
Psychosocial, psychosocial, psychosocial

The limits of the dead!
The limits of the dead!
The limits of the dead!
The limits of the dead!

Fake anti-fascist lie
(Psychosocial)
I tried to tell you but
(Psychosocial)
Your purple hearts are giving out
(Psychosocial)

Can't stop a killing idea
(Psychosocial)
If it's hunting season
(Psychosocial)
Is this what you want?
(Psychosocial)
I'm not the only one

And the rain will kill us all
If we throw ourselves against the wall
But no one else can see
The preservation of the martyr in me

And the rain will kill us all
If we throw ourselves against the wall
But no one else can see
The preservation of the martyr in me

The limits of the dead!
The limits of the dead!

I like it.

She has evolved from her more folk orientated rock of her early years to something I think is a little more interesting and has huge potential. Very much looking forward to the whole album.

Although more commercial than her earlier works, she is still Brooke Fraser. She certainly has more talent than a lot of the recent commercial successes coming out of USA.

Unlike some have said, I don't think she has sold her soul to commercialism.

To all the people saying Brooke has sold out or lost her faith: you don't understand this song. She is showing the darkness of letting social media rule our lives and communication (she is under the black veil because she is symbolic of one who is consumed & falling into the trap of wasting her time on it). There's this guy also trying to kill himself, but he decides not to (he has a lighter on a bed of feathers, folks) or alternatively, he's trying to light a flame but it is easily consumed by the tyrant (severed head) watching over him. He cannot get away. He's clearly had enough of this presence watching over him & distorting the way he views life, himself and others.

Here are the lyrics. Read them as if she is talking to social media:

I love your protection but I don't love you
Your perceived perfection though it's just not true
I want an escape and tonight that's you

You are my victim, you are my muse
Just one specimen of a multitude
I want a cliche I can click on cue

Give me all access, give me what I want

You don't call, you don't write
It's like I don't even know you
You don't look, you never reply
And you won't cause I'm a PSYCHOSOCIAL
It's like I don't even know you
And you won't cause I'm a PSYCHOSOCIAL

I love your protection but I don't love you

It's frightening to me that people here, especially us Christians, are not picking up on the nuances in this song. This is an allegory. She is revealing the mentality inherent in a cybernetic and linked world. How every needs to be connected to multitudes of people without actually getting to know them. It is picking apart the evilness in that mentality that we are moving towards without even realizing it.

Please, look beneath the surface and think about something before you comment .This is excellent. Well done, Brooke Fraser. I honestly don't know how you could have made your point any clearer.

A Brooke é ousada, criativa e irreverente.
