Ghost Train

They're putting up the posters
The carnival's in town
Performing seals and dancing dogs
And gaily painted clowns
So ladies take your places
And wear your finest clothes
Put on your silk and laces
Spin the wheel of fortune
And lay your money down
Let fate be your decider - "faites vos jeux"
The carnival's in town
When the show is over
The empty streets are glistering in the rain
It's still the same
Riding on a ghost train
A feeling stranger than you've ever known
You're all alone.
They're putting up the posters
A wanted man's in town
They say he's armed and dangerous
And now he's gone to ground
He's livin' rough from hand to mouth
A lethal burning fuse
He know his time is running out
There's nothing left to loose
So parents find your children
And keep them safe indoors
He's killed before he'll kill again
The next one could be yours.
When the show is over
The empty streets are glistering in the rain
It's still the same
Riding on a ghost train
A feeling stranger than you've ever known
You're all alone.
The song "Ghost Train" by Brooker Gary depicts a carnival experience where people are excitedly gathering to witness the spectacle. The lyrics describe the scene of a carnival where people are dressed up in silk and laces, wearing their finest clothes, spinning the wheel of fortune and betting their money in the hope of winning the big prize. The carnival promises pleasure, entertainment, and excitement. However, when the carnival ends, it's a different story - the streets are empty, the atmosphere is gloomy, and it's raining. The carnival-goers are now alone and riding a ghost train, a feeling stranger than they have ever known. The ghost train metaphor suggests that life is sometimes scary and unpredictable, and it can make people feel like they are on an eerie and forgotten journey.
The second verse introduces a darker side to the story. A wanted man is in town, and he is armed and dangerous. Parents are urged to keep their children indoors because the man has been known to kill, and he could strike at any time. The man is living rough, burning through his last days, and becoming increasingly desperate. The feeling of being alone is now amplified by a sense of danger, not knowing where the man could be lurking. The song captures the dual nature of life by showing that it has its positive sides, but at the same time, it can be dangerous and frightening.

This song is what I call a lost gem, there are a few of them on Gary's third solo album... One of the few tracks that reminded us of the best hours of Procol Harum... R.I.P. B.J. Wilson and Gary Brooker.
