Believe
Brooks & Dunn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Old man Wrigley lived in that white house
Down the street where I grew up
My mama used to send me over with things
We struck a friendship up
I spent a few long summers
Out on his old porch swing

Said he was in the war, when in the navy
Lost his wife, lost his baby
Broke down and asked him one time
"How you keep from goin' crazy?"
He said, "I'll see my wife and son in just a little while"
Mm, I asked him what he meant, he looked at me and smiled

Said, "I raise my hands
Bow my head
I'm findin' more and more truth
In the words written in red
They tell me that there's more to life
Than just what I can see, I believe"

A few years later I was off at college
Talkin' to mom on the phone one night
Gettin' all caught up on the gossip
The ins and outs of the small town life
She said, "Oh, by the way son
Old man Wrigley's died"

Later on that night
I laid there thinkin' back
Thought about a couple long-lost summers
I didn't know whether to cry or laugh
If there was ever anybody
Deserved a ticket to the other side
It'd be that sweet old man
Who looked me in the eye

Said, "I raise my hands
Bow my head
I'm findin' more and more truth
In the words written in red
They tell me that there's more to life
Than just what I can see"

I can't quote the book
The chapter or the verse
You can't tell me it all ends
In a slow ride in a hearse
You know I'm more and more convinced
The longer that I live
Yeah, this can't be (no, this can't be), no, this can't be (no, this can't be)
No, this can't be all there is

Lord, I raise my hands
Bow my head
Oh, I'm findin' more and more truth
In the words written in red
They tell me that there's more to life
Than just what I can see (just what I can see), I believe

Oh, I (I believe)
I believe
I believe
(I believe)
I believe
(I believe)
I believe
(I believe)
I believe

(I believe)
I believe

Overall Meaning

The song "Believe" by Brooks & Dunn is a poignant tribute to an old man named Wrigley who was once the neighbor of the singer. Old man Wrigley is described as a kind and wise old man, who the singer befriended while growing up. The story goes on to tell how Old man Wrigley lost his wife and baby and was devastated by the loss. The singer asks him how he keeps from going crazy, and the old man tells him that he believes that he will see them again one day soon. When asked how he knows this to be true, the old man simply refers to the "words written in red," alluding to the Bible and the teachings of Jesus Christ.

The song then fast forwards a few years, where the singer is now in college, and his mom calls to tell him that Old man Wrigley has passed away. The news hits the singer hard as he thinks back to the lessons and advice that the old man had given him. He then reflects on his own beliefs and his faith in the afterlife, concluding that he is more and more convinced that there is more to life than just what can be seen.

The lyrics of the song tell a beautiful story of friendship, loss, and faith. It is a touching tribute to the faith that many people have in the afterlife and the hope that it provides to those who have lost loved ones.

This evening we have the funeral services for my nephew, who passed last week after 15 month battle of cancer he was so strong into his faith. I have never been one to be religious. I like to believe that thereโ€™s a God and an afterlife but this morning as I get in my car, I turn on the radio and the song believe by Brooks & Dunn starts playing. Itโ€™s gotta be a sign for Micky saying look, Iโ€™m OK Iโ€™m not in any more pain and Iโ€™m here with Jesus. Definitely gave me comfort that was needed.
