Play Something Country
Brooks & Dunn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yes, she blew through the door like TNT,
Put her hand on her hip, pointed a finger at me.
Said "I'm a whiskey drinking, cowboy chasing, helluva time.
"I like Kenny, Keith, Allan and Patsy Cline.
"I'm a full grown queen bee looking for honey.
"Ha oh ho, aw, play something country."

Yeah, the band took a break,
The DJ played P Diddy.
She said "I didn't come here to hear,
Something thumping from the city."
Said "I, I shaved my legs, I paid my money."
Ha oh ho, play something country."
"Ha oh ho, aw, play something country."

Crank up the band, play the steel guitar.
Hank it up a little, let's rock this bar.
Threw back a shot, yelled "I'm a George Strait junkie."
"Ha oh ho, play something country."
"Ha oh ho, aw, play something country."

Yeah, the bartender yelled "y'all, it's closing time."
She got this wild look on her face,
An' said "Your truck or mine,
"I know a place down the road,
"It's kinda funky.
"Ha oh ho, all out in the country.
"Ha oh ho, now, play something country."

Crank up the band, play the steel guitar.
Hank it up a little, let's rock this bar.
Threw back a shot, yelled "I'm a George Strait junkie."
"Ha oh ho, play something country."
"Ha oh ho, aw, play something country."

Crank up the band, play the steel guitar.
Hank it up a little, let's rock this bar.
Threw back a shot, yelled "I'm a George Strait junkie."

"Ha oh ho, play something country."
"Ha oh ho, aw, play something country."

Overall Meaning

The song "Play Something Country" by Brooks & Dunn is a playful and flirtatious tale of a woman who is brazenly chasing after a good time in a honky-tonk bar. The song opens with the woman striding into the bar with confidence, ready to take on the night. She tells the singer that she likes whiskey and cowboys, and that she's looking for a "full grown queen bee looking for honey." She demands that the band plays something country, rejecting the thumping beats of P Diddy that the DJ is playing.

As the night goes on, the woman becomes more and more animated, taking shots and yelling that she's a George Strait junkie. The singer describes her wild energy and her eagerness to keep the music playing and the party going, even as closing time approaches. The woman offers to go with the singer to a "funky" place down the road, and urges the band to "play something country" one last time.

Overall, the song is a lively celebration of the kind of country music that gets people dancing and having a good time. It's a tribute to the wild, free-spirited women who are unafraid to speak their minds and go after what they want, and a reminder that sometimes the most fun can be found in the simple pleasures of life.

We played this song at my Moms Calling hours. 7 years ago. I said a quick Eulogy. And then the funeral director cranked this song as loud as he could. The place was packed with 200 of her close friends and family. I can remember looking over at the casket and I could seriously see her smiling. I knew in my heart that we did that right. Years before so had gotten sick she joked that she was gonna blow though the gates of Heaven like TNT. Without any doubt I know she did!!! Love you Mom !!
