Friends in Low Places
Brooks Garth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blame it all on my roots
I showed up in boots
And ruined your black tie affair
The last one to know
The last one to show
I was the last one you thought you'd see there
And I saw the surprise
And the fear in his eyes
When I took his glass of champagne
And I toasted you
Said "honey, we may be through"
But you'll never hear me complain

'Cause I've got friends in low places
Where the whiskey drowns
And the beer chases my blues away
And I'll be okay
I'm not big on social graces
Think I'll slip on down to the oasis
Oh, I've got friends in low places

Well, I guess I was wrong
I just don't belong
But then, I've been there before
Everything's all right
I'll just say goodnight
And I'll show myself to the door
Hey, I didn't mean
To cause a big scene
Just give me an hour and then
Well, I'll be as high as that ivory tower
That you're livin' in

'Cause I've got friends in low places
Where the whiskey drowns
And the beer chases my blues away
And I'll be okay
I'm not big on social graces
Think I'll slip on down to the oasis
Oh, I've got friends in low places

I've got friends in low places
Where the whiskey drowns
And the beer chases my blues away
And I'll be okay
I'm not big on social graces
Think I'll slip on down to the oasis
Oh, I've got friends in low places

I've got friends in low places
Where the whiskey drowns
And the beer chases my blues away
And I'll be okay
I'm not big on social graces
Think I'll slip on down to the oasis
Oh, I've got friends in low places

I've got friends in low places
Where the whiskey drowns

And the beer chases my blues away
And I'll be okay

Overall Meaning

The song "Friends in Low Places" by Garth Brooks tells the story of a man who doesn't fit into the high society and has been excluded from it. He shows up at a black-tie event, wearing boots which makes him stand out even more from the rest of the guests. The singer then sees the look of surprise and fear on the faces of the attendees, including his ex-girlfriend, who is at the event. He then takes a glass of champagne from another guest and toasts to his ex-girlfriend, telling her that despite their breakup, he's not going to complain.

The chorus is a celebration of his friends in low places, where he can enjoy whiskey, beer, and get away from his troubles. He's not interested in social graces and prefers the oasis with his friends. The last verse shows the man eventually realizing that he doesn't fit in at the event and decides to leave. But not before telling his ex-girlfriend that he will soon be as "high as the ivory tower" in which she resides because he has friends in low places.
