My Heart
Brooks and Dunn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When your headlights cut across my wall
Yeah, I thought it might be you
Looking for a place to fall
Talking sweet and thinking small
Seeking out convenient arms
Yeah, and resting for a while
Someone to keep you safe and warm
While you ride out your latest storm
Oh

[Chorus]
My heart's not a hotel
You can check in and out of
It's not a temporary shelter
It's a home for someone's love
Don't just come here when you're lonely
Knowing full an' well you wont stay
'cause I don't have the strength tonight
To turn you away

Oh don't let the dawn find me asleep
On a pillow of regret
Take all my dreams, just leave the key
And let me keep my dignity
Cause

[Chorus]

No don't come when you're lonely
Knowing full an' well you wont stay
Cause I don't have the strength tonight
To turn you away

I don't have the strength tonight
To turn you away

Overall Meaning

Brooks and Dunn's "My Heart" is a song which describes a familiar situation where someone who has a history with the singer returns, looking for temporary comfort and shelter from their current situation. The song is about a person who comes back to the singer hoping to "check-in" and "keep warm" in their heart but is warned that the singer's heart is not a hotel, and it's not a temporary shelter—it's a home for someone's love. The person is asked not to come when they are lonely, knowing they won't stay, as the singer does not have the strength to turn them away.

The song is essentially about setting boundaries, specifically in love and relationships. The lyrics are powerful, honest, and act as a reminder for the importance of self-respect and self-care. The singer acknowledges that they deserve more than just being someone's temporary shelter, regardless of how much they care for this person.

Overall, My Heart is a perfect representation of Brooks and Dunn's signature sound. It features the duo's country-style vocals, together with their incredible harmonies, and plenty of emotionally poignant lyrics.

Lyrics:
Maybe it was the moonlight
The scent of you on the breeze
Maybe it was your shadow fell over me
Such a beautiful stranger
Eyes darker than coal
Your first look crossed the desert
Into my soul

Mi corazon perdido en ti
My heart is lost to you
You have captured my love completely
My heart is lost to you
Oh, my heart is lost to you

Maybe it was the music
The way it moved with your hair
Or the heat of the moment
That hung in the air
But when I saw you there dancing
Mesmerized by your gaze
There was some kind of magic
Led me away

Mi corazon perdido en ti
My heart is lost to you
You have captured my love completely
My heart is lost to you
Oh, my heart is lost to you
Mi corazon perdido en ti
My heart is lost to you
You have captured my love completely
My heart is lost to you
My heart is lost to you

I would honestly give anything I could to have this song played live for the mother of my daughter. Our relationship has been rough for a few years but I have never once change the way I feel about her. It’s hell but my heart is truly lost and belongs to her and no one else.

Good for you man. Marry her if that’s how it is. God will honor your commitment in that.

From the album "Steers & Stripes" (2001); Four singles were released from the album, in order of the single's release they were: "Only in America", "Ain't Nothing 'Bout You", "The Long Goodbye", and "My Heart is Lost to You".👍

Certainly not the only time country music and Spanish/Mexican/Tejano (Tex-Mex) music melded together... Johnny Cash first did that with his 1963 rendition of "Ring of Fire" with the Mariachi horns, and then 25 years later, Dwight Yoakam's version of Buck Owens' "Streets of Bakersfield" had added a tinge of Tejano with Flaco Jimenez (of the Texas Tornados) on accordion.
