Long Way Home
Brother Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look over here....look over there
Look all around me everywhere
Well it doesn't really matter
Which way i want to go

'Cause the night is a fallin'
And I'm a long long way from home
I am a long long way from home, yes i am

Listen to this... listen to that
People tryin' to tell me
Where it's at
But it really doesn't matter

I hear it all the time
And I'm standing at the crossroads
'bout to move on down the line

About to move on down the line

Well I've been over here... been over there
Friends all around me everywhere
But it really doesn't matter
Which way i want to go

I'm a million miles from nowhere
And that's a long long way from home
And that's a long long way from home

Yeah a million miles from nowhere

And that's a long long way from home
And that's a long long way from home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in "Long Way Home" by Brother describe the feeling of being lost, both physically and emotionally. The opening lines "Look over here....look over there, Look all around me everywhere" suggest a sense of confusion and uncertainty about where the singer is and where they should be going. It's clear that they're feeling lost and alone, with no real sense of direction. They're looking for guidance from others ("People tryin' to tell me where it's at") but ultimately, it's up to them to find their own path.

As the night falls, the sense of being lost becomes ever more pressing, with the singer admitting that they're a "long long way from home" and "a million miles from nowhere." This feeling of isolation is juxtaposed with the idea that they have friends all around them, which speaks to the idea that even when we're surrounded by people we care about, we can still feel alone.

The repetition of the lines "But it really doesn't matter which way I want to go" and "And that's a long long way from home" further emphasize the singer's sense of disorientation and detachment from the familiar. The song ends on a somewhat ambiguous note, with the singer "standing at the crossroads 'bout to move on down the line." It's unclear whether they'll find their way home or continue wandering, but the lyrics suggest that the journey is just as important as the destination.

Those are mostly 25NC locomotives, the last series to be active on the South African Railways, on the last piece of mainline before it was electrified or replaced by diesel. Thereis a cameo by the Red Devil an experimental 25NC changed to class 26. The experiment were to show that powerful steam was possible, but came too late. The 26 was indeed very powerful but one of its problems were slipping on departure, which can be seen in the video.
