Brother Ali Lyrics

[Brother Ali]
One side of the street, is Malone's Funeral Home and the
Other side's a library, try very hard to picture this shit
Walk through where I live at
Where parents are embarrassed to tell you they raise they kids at
You'll need some half and half over 8 bar you can get that
Fuck with Little Rodney and you'll get all of your ribs cracked
In a location where slanging crack rock is not seen as a fuckin' recreation but a vocation
And the cellars, and the smoke is a ????
Got one eye on Minneapolis P.T. they both racin'
3 for 50 is the supply and demand, and the
Twin Cities' American heartland, and they
Been busy, masterminds tearing apart plans
And hoop dreamers ballin' with blisters on they hands
With chains danglin' from the rims
Pain strangles 'em from within
Till' the belt around the arm makes the veins stand at attention

I try to block it out with a bed sheet the moonlight's as a curtain
'Cause I'm not comforted by red and blue lights when I'm hurtin'
Mommy loves you yeah I knew but I wasn't certain
'Cause the lenses through which she views life wasn't workin'
As a boy she told me wait till' your father to come home
I'm 24 still waitin' for my father to come home
And some parents only touch they children when a whips brought
That's why bad kids do bad shit, just so they could caught
And get touched, this growing up shit's rough
That's a big part of why were so mixed up
Shit we don't have Bar Mitzvah's
We become men the first time our father hits us
And we don't open gifts up
Sister Regina from across the street is beautiful
But for 50 bucks ain't nothing she won't do to you
Used to be premium pussy now she used up
For that same 50 bucks she got to do some new stuff
Whatever it takes for you to take the dollars out
If you don't intervene then there's a day she'll turn her daughter out
Speaking of kids I'm fixing lunch for my first born
I had the windows wide open 'cause the weather's warm
That's when the greatest hits of Donnie Hathaway
Got interrupted by a drive-by shooting half a block away
Vaheem was in the window, he didn't get hit though
All please due to Allah

[Chorus]
I see all this from the desk that I write my rhymes from
Pen starts to scribble on it's own my minds numb
But you can call me modern urban Norman Rockwell
I paint a picture of the spot well

I see all this from the desk that I write my rhymes from
Pen starts to scribble on it's own my minds numb
But you can call me modern urban Norman Rockwell
I paint a picture of the spot well

I see all this from the desk that I write my rhymes from
Pen starts to scribble on it's own my minds numb

But you can call me modern urban Norman Rockwell
I paint a picture of the spot...well

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Brother Ali's "Room With a View" describe the reality of growing up in a low-income neighborhood in Minneapolis that is rife with violence, drug addiction, and broken families. In the first stanza, Ali paints a vivid picture of the street where he lives, which is flanked on one side by a funeral home and on the other by a library. While the library would typically be a positive symbol of education and knowledge, in this context, it highlights the irony that many of the parents who live in this area are too ashamed to admit to others that they raise their children there. The stark contrast between the two neighboring shops represents the duality of life in this neighborhood.

The second stanza explores the theme of absent fathers and the toxic relationships that can form between parents and their children. Ali describes waiting for his father to come home, a feeling that he has been experiencing for years without any resolution. He also touches on the idea that some parents only touch their children when a whip is brought out, perpetuating the cycle of abuse. The stanza ends with a chilling image of Sister Regina, a prostitute who will do anything for $50, including turning out her own daughter. The final verse of the song narrates Ali's experience of a drive-by shooting that happened half a block away while he was home with his son, reminding us that violence is a constant presence in this environment.

Overall, "Room With a View" is a poignant commentary on the harsh realities of living in a low-income neighborhood in America, marked by poverty, addiction, and crime. Brother Ali's lyrics are raw and unflinching, exposing the painful truths that many people try to ignore or sweep under the rug. Through his vivid imagery and poignant storytelling, he offers a glimpse into the often-ignored world of the inner city, where hope is scarce, and survival is the ultimate goal.

Yeah I picked up this CD after an Atmosphere show at the Henry Fonda in Los Angeles for the God Loves Ugly Tour and listened to it on my drive home and was blown away. Then I saw Ali's show in West Hollywood shortly after I was in awe at this mans stage presence and ability to interact and control a crowd. Truthfully his live shows which ive seen 3 different times were all more powerful then the 4 times ive seen atmosphere through there early years into late last year. Eligh, The Grouch, & Brother Ali for "The Grouch That Stole Christmas" show in Boise, ID was sick too. Eyedea had just died shortly before and Ali' did a cover of Eyedea "Smile" as a tribute and it was touching. I still have the pics I took with Eligh who was just getting out of a heroin addiction which I was too & receiving methadone treatment and he wrote the nicest words of encouragement ever in the sleeve of his "Grey Crow" Album. Eligh was an amazingly humble guy as well.
