The group's first singles, "I Should Have Lied", "How Many Times", "Chain-Gang Smile" (produced by Don Was from Was Not Was) and "Can You Keep a Secret?", were all written by band members Eg White and Carl Fysh, and performed by the band. None of the singles troubled the UK top 50, but were minor chart entries.
However, Stock, Aitken and Waterman auctioned off their services to charity and Brother Beyond and label EMI won the auction . The first song to be released from this session was "The Harder I Try", a number 2 hit that was only kept off the top by the million-seller "Groovy Kind Of Love", by Phil Collins. "The Harder I Try" famously samples the drum intro to The Isley Brothers' "This Old Heart Of Mine", and indeed the song as a whole has a distinct Motown feel, as does its successor "He Ain't No Competition", the 12" of this topping the HI-NRG charts in October 88, where it stayed until it was knocked off by Samantha Fox cover of "I Only Wanna Be With You", again produced by SAW. Their final significant hit was a remix of album-track "Be My Twin", which got to number 14. Subsequent releases delivered lesser returns, with "Can You Keep A Secret" hitting 22, "Drive On" from their second album hitting 39, "Trust" at 53 and a cover of The Three Degrees' "When Will I See You Again?" stalling at 43. After a year-long break, the band enjoyed some US success with "The Girl I Used To Know" and a final UK chart-entry at 48.
They released two albums, Get Even (1988) and Trust (1989) before disbanding in 1991.
After The split lead singer Nathan Moore went on to sing with another boy band called Worlds Apart, and now is working as a manager to such acts as Jessica Garlick, he was also a contestant on ITV's Hit Me Baby One More Time and infamous for being part of Lisa Scott-Lee's Totally Scott-Lee set up. Drummer Steve Alexander toured with Duran Duran for six years, before going solo. Carl Fysh now works for a PR agency in London and became manager to male duo Fierce Girl. David White is currently studying for a BA degree in Fine Art at Central St Martin's College in London. He has shown his paintings around England and Israel.
After leaving Brother Beyond, Eg White formed the duo Eg and Alice with artist Alice Temple. They released one album in 1991 before Eg went solo, covering the Jellyfish hit 'Stay Home'. Eg White won an Ivor Novello award for writing Will Young's "Leave Right Now" and has written songs for a variety of artists, including Natalie Imbruglia and Joss Stone.
He Ain't No Competition
Brother Beyond Lyrics

But he ain't won your heart completely
He tries to put me down
But that's just jealousy.
You may be in his arms
Bit I know it's me you're missing
So I'm gonna set every wheel
In motion to win your love for me.
Or treat you better than me.
When it comes down to loving you he ain't no competition.
He says he's in control
But his love won't last forever
He says he loves you now
But that's not eternity.
I'm gonna make you mine and we'll share a life together
I'm gonna show you what you've been missing
Just you wait and see.
'Cause he could never need you like I really need you
Or love you better than me.
When it comes down to loving you he ain't no competition.
When it comes down to loving you he ain't no competition.
Sometimes when we're close I'm sure you'll hear how my heart's
Beating
So I'm gonna set every wheel in motion to win your love for me.
'Cause he could never hold you like I wanna hold you
Or treat you better than me.
When it comes down to loving you he ain't no competition.
When it comes down to loving you he ain't no competition.
When it comes down to loving you he ain't no competition.
When it comes down to loving you he ain't no competition.
The lyrics of Brother Beyond's song "He Ain't No Competition" is about a love triangle, with the singer trying to win back the heart of a woman he loves. The woman is currently with another man, who the singer sees as a temporary obstacle. He is confident that he can win her love because he understands that his competitor's love cannot last forever, unlike his own. He believes that his love for her is deeper and more lasting than that of his competitor.
In the first verse, the singer acknowledges that his competitor has the woman's attention, but he is not threatened because he knows that his competitor's put-downs are just products of his jealousy. He tells the woman that he knows that she is missing him, and he will do everything in his power to win her back. He asserts that his competitor can never hold or love her the way he can, which makes him confident that he will win the competition.
In the second verse, the singer dismisses his competitor's claims of being in control and loving the woman, stating that it's only a temporary situation. He promises to make the woman his own and show her the love that she has been missing. He is sure that his love for her is stronger than his competitor's and that he is the better man for her.
Overall, the lyrics speak of a confident and determined man who believes that he can win back the woman he loves. He sees his competitor as a temporary obstacle who cannot stand in the way of his love for her.
