The Light
Bruce Lyrics

I know the girls grow up fast where you come from
You left behind what was asked and you were married baby oh so young
Now that little girl of yours looks like she's growing up over night

Do you miss the party lights?
Do you miss the party lights?
Do you miss the party lights?
When you're lying in bed tonight

He was gonna be your Romeo, you were going to be his Juliet
These days you don't wait on Romeos you just wait on that welfare check
While other girls your age are out with lovers taken in the night

Do you miss the party lights?
Do you miss the party lights?
Do you miss the party lights?
When you're lying in bed tonight

Sometimes I see you on the street and you look so tired
I know that job you've got leaves you so uninspired
when I stop by to take you out to eat
I find you lying, all dressed up on the bed, baby, fast asleep

Then as I lean across the bed, darlin, to switch out the light
I wonder if you miss the party lights

Do you miss the party lights?
Do you miss the party lights?
When you're lying in bed tonight

Grab your coat and grab your hat go in the bathroom put that makeup on
We're gonna take that little brat, we're gonna drop her off at your mom's
Just give me a sign, I'm waiting on the line tonight
If you miss the party lights
If you miss the party lights
If you miss the party lights
When you're lying in bed tonight

Do you miss the party lights
When you're lying in bed tonight

Do you miss the party lights? (do you miss the party lights?)
Do you miss the party lights? (do you miss the party lights?)
Do you miss the party lights? (do you miss the party lights?)
Do you miss the party lights? (do you miss the party lights?)
Do you miss the party lights? (do you miss the party lights?)

Do you miss the party lights? (do you miss the party lights?)
Do you miss the party lights? (do you miss the party lights?)

Overall Meaning

"The Light" is a haunting ballad by Bruce Springsteen that addresses the disconnection between two people, one of whom had to abandon youthful dreams and ambitions to settle into a relationship and family life that she may have never fully anticipated. The song is an emotional rollercoaster that moves between compassion, longing, and anger as it explores the circumstances that led to a woman's unfulfilled dreams.

The song seems to be about a woman who got married and had a child when she was young, and now lives a life that she regrets. She's struggling to make ends meet and her dreams appear to have died. The lyrics refer to a specific woman and her family members throughout the lyrics, making the song feel incredibly personal. The central question of the song asks, "Do you miss the party lights?" referring to the carefree, exciting life that this woman once knew before settling down.

The song "The Light" tells a sad story of a woman who was once full of dreams but who had to settle for something less. The lyrics describe her life, and how she had to leave behind everything she wanted in order to take care of her family. The chorus asks if she misses the life she could have had, and if she is happy with the one she has now. The song’s emotional charge is made even more poignant by the sparse, elegiac guitar work that lays a foundation of pathos under the lyrics.

Young Springsteen had a lot of Dylan running through his veins in his early days. This song was a fine but rough cut stone that Manfred turned into a modern Pieta. Deep respect to both.

@emwhome1

I understand why this didn’t make it. Manfred really blew it out of the water.

“Blinded by the Light” was Springsteen’s first song on his first album, “Greetings from Asbury Park”. He said years later that the song makes no sense. He wrote it on bus and said he just started writing lines that rhymed in a sort of stream of consciousness form.

OMG! Just found out this was Bruce's song originally! Wow! Thanks for writing it Bruce but I actually like it better by Manfred Mann's Earth Band. I enjoyed yours too of course.

@gabriellashimone6546

This was the first version I ever heard. I always loved it and then the more dance version by Manfred Mann came out and I fell in love with it but, that said, this original version has a more folky feel, more of a story with the connection to the life we live as adolescents, seeking that crest to make our mark upon in some way. Please don't misunderstand, I love dancing to the Manfred Mann revision but this version will always hold a special place in my heart.

@billherbert4961

This song has actual lyrics all the way through. Although I do like the rumble mumble mumbo jumbo studio sound lyrics with the band too.
