Born In The USA
Bruce & the E Street Band Springsteen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Born down in a dead man's town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
End up like a dog that's been beat too much
'Til you spend half your life just to cover it up now

Born in the USA
I was born in the USA
I was born in the USA
Born in the USA now

Got in a little hometown jam
So they put a rifle in my hands
Sent me off to a foreign land
To go and kill the yellow man

Born in the USA
I was born in the USA
I was born in the USA
I was born in the USA

Come back home to the refinery
Hiring man said, "Son if it was up to me"
Went down to see my VA man
He said, "Son, don't you understand now?"
(Ok)
(No, no)
(No, no, no)

I had a brother at Khe Sanh
Fighting off all the Viet Cong
They're still there, he's all gone

He had a woman he loved in Saigon
I got a picture of him in her arms now

Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I'm ten years burning down the road
Nowhere to run ain't got nowhere to go

Born in the USA
I was born in the USA now
Born in the USA
I'm a long gone Daddy in the USA now
Born in the USA
Born in the USA
Born in the USA
I'm a cool rocking Daddy in the USA now

(Oh, no)
(Oh, no, no, no)
(Oh, no, no)
(Oh, no, no, no)
Hey

(Oh, no, no)
Woo

Overall Meaning

Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen is often misinterpreted as a patriotic song. However, the lyrics actually speak of a man who is struggling to make sense of his life after being sent to war in Vietnam. The song begins with the singer lamenting about his upbringing in a decaying town, where he is metaphorically "born in a dead man's town". The first kick he took was a metaphor for being thrown into a life of poverty and despair. The singer goes on to lament about how his life has been ruined and how he has been "beat too much" that he's like a dog.

The song then shifts towards the Vietnam War, where the singer was drafted and sent to fight. He ends up killing innocent people and being traumatized by the experience. When he returns home, he is disappointed because his government has abandoned him, and he is ridiculed by his fellow citizens because of his participation in the war. The chorus "Born in the USA" is a response to the lack of opportunities and false promises made to the working-class people of his generation.

Max Weinberg is an absolutely underrated drummer. The way he held together the E Street Band throughout those hours of sets. All class!

You know without a shadow of a doubt every member of this band put 110% in performing this song, as it should be. Wish our country & the world wasn’t so at odds of ridiculous politics. Great song !
