Jerusalem
Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And did those feet in ancient times
Walk upon England's mountains green?
Was the holy lamb of god
On England's pleasant pastures seen?

And did the countenance divine
Shine forth on our clouded hill?
Was Jerusalem built here
In England's green and pleasant land?

Let it rain
Let it rain
Wash the scales from my eyes
Let it rain
Let it rain
Let me see again

Bring me my bow of burning gold
Bring me my arrows of desire
I shall not sleep till the clouds unfold
Bring me my chariot of fire

Let it rain
Let it rain
Tears of blood fall out of the sky
Let it rain
Let it rain
Wash me clean again

From the frozen waters
The king will rise again
With two suns in the sky

I shall not cease from mental flight
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land

Let it rain
Let it rain
Tears of blood fall out of the sky
Let it rain
Let it rain
Wash me clean again

See the gleaming spires of the citadel
The king and queen will dwell
In our hearts

Can Jerusalem be rebuilt here
In this trivial time, in this land of fear?
In Jerusalem, where the grail remains
Walk into the light and dissolve the chains

Jerusalem.

Here is her secret place
From hence she comes forth on the churches in delight
Here is her cup, filled with its poisons
In these horrid veils
And here, her scarlet veil, woven in pestilence and war

Here is Jerusalem, bound in chains
In the dense of Babylon.

Overall Meaning

"Jerusalem" is a song by Bruce Dickinson that is a cover of a poem written by William Blake in 1804. The poem is famous for asking the question of whether Jesus Christ ever visited England, and if so, did he visit the verdant hills and pastoral landscapes. The poem speculates that if Christ did indeed visit England, then Jerusalem may have been built on this pleasant land. In the song, the singer asks for rain to cleanse his sight so he can see the truth. He then calls for his bow and arrows, saying that he will not rest until the clouds disperse and he can ride his chariot of fire. The second half of the song takes on a more mystical tone, with the king rising again from the frozen waters and two suns appearing in the sky. The singer declares that he will not stop until he and his people have built Jerusalem, echoing the last two lines of Blake's poem.

The song "Jerusalem" was released in 1998 on Bruce Dickinson's album "The Chemical Wedding." The album is a concept album that covers various themes, including alchemy, mysticism, and the apocalypse. "Jerusalem" is the seventh track on the album. The song has been covered by other artists, including Emerson, Lake & Palmer, who made the song popular in the 1970s, and has been used as a theme song for various sporting events, including for the England cricket team.

Excellent song from excellent singer

Vít Sobotka

4:59 and forward has to be the best part. The drama in Bruce´s voice, it is unbelievable. It is a shame not a lot of people know of his solo work.

This should be official English anthem. Absolutely brilliant lyrics by Blake and wonderful arrangement by Bruce.

Pete Richards

You're correct. This is the official anthem of the English cricket fans everywhere we go. Australia..India West Indies. This is our song

christo

yes, but only the ELP version as it is more reverent.

Pedro Coelho

Tinha o álbum The Chemical Wedding em CD! Esse álbum é bom pacas, curto muito escutar ele! Essa música é bem épica, clássica do cantor.

TayR0C

Bruce has fantastic vocals. Amazing.

razi3l23

His voice is incredible and the whole solo career no worse than iron maiden.

MosoKaiser

My thoughts as well! In fact, I think I'd prefer a follow-up to Tyranny of Souls than another 76 minute mammoth of a Maiden album... :p
