doch mein Freund geht gemeinsam,
mit ihr, seit dem Tennesee Walts.
Ja sie tanzten verliebt,
nach dem Tennesee Walts,
aber ich sah allein ihnen zu.
Heute abend bin ich einsam,
doch mein Freund geht gemeinsam,
mit ihr, seit dem Tennesee Walts.
The lyrics for Bruce Low's song Tennessee Waltz tells a bittersweet story of a man who attended a dance with his lover, only to have his friend come back into his life after a long absence. When the singer introduces his friend to his lover, his friend takes her hand and the two fall in love, leaving the singer feeling lonely and heartbroken as he watches them dance the Tennessee Waltz. The song is poignant, containing various themes of love, lost opportunities and a sense of longing.
The song's emotional lyrics were penned by Redd Stewart, a country and Western songwriter and musician, in 1946 with music composed by Pee Wee King. The song was first recorded by Cowboy Copas, but it was Patti Page's 1950 version of the song that became the most popular rendition, reaching the top of the Billboard charts the following year.

Als ich tanzte,
As I danced,
mit der Liebsten,
With my beloved,
nach dem Tennesee Walts,
To the Tennessee Waltz,
kam ein Freund,
A friend came,

Whom I had not seen in a long time.
und ich nannte seinen Namen
And I called his name
und er küsste ihre Hand,
And he kissed her hand
That was the end of them.
Ja sie tanzten verliebt,
Yes, they danced in love,
aber ich sah allein ihnen zu.
But I watched them alone.
Heute abend bin ich einsam,
Tonight I am lonely,
doch mein Freund geht gemeinsam,
But my friend is going along
