High Hopes
Bruce Springsteen;Tom Morello Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Monday morning runs to Sunday night
Screaming slow me down before the new year dies
Well it won't take much to kill a loving smile
And every mother with a baby crying in her arms, singing
Give me help, give me strength
Give a soul a night of fearless sleep
Give me love, give me peace
Don't you know these days you pay for everything
Got high hopes
I got high hopes
Got high hopes
I got high hopes

Coming from the city, coming from the wild
I see a breathless army breaking like a cloud
They're gonna smother love, they're gonna shoot your hopes
Before the meek inherit they'll learn to hate themselves
Give me help, give me strength
Give a soul a night of fearless sleep
Give me love, give me peace
Don't you know these days you pay for everything
Got high hopes
I got high hopes
I got high hopes
I got high hopes

Give me help, give me strength
Give a soul a night of fearless sleep
Give me love, give me peace
Don't you know these days you pay for everything
I got high hopes
Got high hopes
I got high hopes
Got high hopes

Tell me someone now, what's the price
I wanna buy some time and maybe live my life
I wanna have a wife, I wanna have some kids
I wanna look in their eyes and know they'll stand a chance

Give me help, give me strength
Give a soul a night of fearless sleep
Give me love, give me peace
Don't you know these days you pay for everything
I got high hopes
Got high hopes
I got high hopes
Got high hopes

Got high hopes
I got high hopes

I got high hopes
I got high hopes

Overall Meaning

The song "High Hopes" by Bruce Springsteen is beautifully interpreted by Tom Morello, combining Springsteen's original tune with Morello's own touch. The song addresses the daily struggles and pressures we face in life, from the corporate world to the ordinary lives of regular people. In the first verse, the lyrics "Monday morning runs to Sunday night, screaming slow me down before the new year dies" express the urgency and fleeting nature of time, while "it won't take much to kill a loving smile" conveys the fragility of happiness in life. The chorus then provides a glimmer of hope with the lines "Give me help, give me strength, Give a soul a night of fearless sleep, Give me love, give me peace," emphasizing the importance of support and faith in dark times.

The second verse talks about the challenges that come with living in a broken society, with the lines "They're gonna smother love, they're gonna shoot your hopes, Before the meek inherit they'll learn to hate themselves" describing the corruption and oppression that exists in the world. However, the chorus remains steadfast in its message, repeating the lines "I got high hopes," as a mantra of resilience and optimism.

Overall, "High Hopes" is a powerful anthem that encourages listeners to keep pushing forward and never lose sight of their dreams, even in the face of adversity.

Big fan of Bruce and the E Street band. Just wish he would tour with just the core members of E Street. Nils and Little Steven are great compliments to any Springsteen song. Nils being one of the most underated guitar players today without a doubt. I have been a fan of Nils since the Grin days he is so damn good live. Morello is a fine guitarist but he is not Nils, I am sorry just stating a fact. Go see Nils solo show and he does not dissappoint. Also saw the Steve Van Zandt tour and was blown away. These old guys know how to put on a great show.

According to his book, Bruce brought Morello on tour because Steven had an acting commitment. The Boss originally recorded a cover of High Hopes, originally by the Havalines, in1995. Morello had a big part in digging it up out the catalog and rearranging it into this killer version with full horns, etc.

Steve Van Zandt live is just some next level thing. Like fine wine, these guys get better and better ad infinitum with age
