4th of July Asbury Park
Bruce Springsteen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sandy the fireworks are hailin' over little Eden tonight
Forcin' a light into all those stony faces left stranded on this fourth of July
Down in town the circuit's full of switchblade lovers so fast, so shiny, so sharp
As the wizards play down on Pinball Way on the boardwalk way past dark
And the boys from the casino dance
With their shirts open like Latin lovers on the shore
Chasin' all them silly New York virgins by the score
And Sandy, the aurora is risin' behind us
This pier lights our carnival life forever
Oh love me tonight for I may never see you again
Hey Sandy girl

My, my baby
Now the greasers, ah they tramp the streets
Or get busted for sleeping on the beach all night
Them boys in their high heels ah Sandy their skins are so white
And me I just got tired of hangin' in them dusty arcades
Bangin' them pleasure machines
Chasin' the factory girls underneath the boardwalk
Where they all promise to unsnap their jeans
And you know that tilt-a-whirl down on the south beach drag
I got on it last night and my shirt got caught
And they kept me spinnin' I didn't think I'd ever get off

Oh Sandy, the aurora is risin' behind us
This pier lights our carnival life on the water
Laughin' 'neath the boardwalk, ah, with the boss's daughter
I remember Sandy girl, na, na, na, na, na baby

Sandy that waitress I was seeing lost her desire for me
I spoke with her last night
She said she won't set herself on fire for me anymore
She worked that joint under the boardwalk
She was always the girl you saw boppin' down the beach with the radio
The kids say last night she was dressed like a star
In one of them cheap little seaside bars
And I saw her parked with lover boy out on the Kokomo
Did you hear the cops finally busted Madame Marie
For tellin' fortunes better than they do
For me this boardwalk life is through, babe
You ought to quit this scene too

Sandy, the aurora is rising behind us
This pier lights our carnival life forever
Oh, love me tonight and I promise I'll love you forever
Oh, I mean it, Sandy, girl
My, my, my, my, my baby

Yeah, I promise, Sandy, girl
Sha, la, la, la, la, baby

Overall Meaning

"4th of July, Asbury Park" is a song that tells a story of a summer night in Asbury Park, New Jersey, during the Fourth of July celebrations. The first stanza creates a vivid picture of the scene on the streets, where fireworks are lighting up the sky and switchblade lovers roam the circuit. The singer takes note of the "boys from the casino" who dance in open shirts, chasing after "silly New York virgins by the score." The mesmerizing aura of Sandy comes into the picture, and the singer pleads with her to love him tonight, promising that he'll love her forever.

The second and third stanzas introduce us to the "greasers" who tramp the streets, and the dusty arcades where the singer used to hang out. He remembers chasing the factory girls underneath the boardwalk, where they promised to "unsnap their jeans." The last verse suggests that the singer's life on the boardwalk is over, and he urges Sandy to quit the scene too.

The song captures the essence of a typical summer night on the Jersey Shore with its carnival life, young love, and fleeting romance. Springsteen paints a vivid picture of the boardwalk culture where working-class kids chase after factory girls and the boys from the casino dance with New York virgins. The lyrics also hint at the transience of this culture, where even the waitresses lose their desire for their lovers and move on to other people.

[Verse 1]
Sandy, the fireworks are hailing over Little Eden tonight
Forcing a light into all those stony faces left stranded on this warm July
Down in the town, the Circuit's full of switchblade lovers, so fast, so shiny, so sharp

And the boys from the casino dance with their shirts open like Latin lovers on the shore

Sandy the fireworks are hailin' over Little Eden tonight
Forcin' a light into all those stoned-out faces left stranded on this Fourth of July
Down in town the circuit's full with switchblade lovers so fast so shiny so sharp
And the wizards play down on Pinball Way on the boardwalk way past dark
And the boys from the casino dance with their shirts open like Latin lovers along the shore
Chasin' all them silly New York girls
Pourchassant leurs petites idiotes New-Yorkaises
Sandy the aurora is risin' behind us
Sandy, le jour se lève derrière nous
The pier lights our carnival life forever
Love me tonight for I may never see you again
Hey Sandy girl
Hey, petite Sandy
Now the greasers they tramp the streets
Or get busted for trying to sleep on the beach all night
Them boys in their spiked high heels ah Sandy their skins are so white
Chasin' the factory girls underneath the boardwalk where they promise to unsnap their jeans
And you know that tilt-a-whirl down on the south beach drag
I got on it last night and my shirt got caught
And that Joey kept me spinnin' I didn't think I'd ever get off
Oh Sandy the aurora is risin' behind us
Sandy, le jour se lève derrière nous
The pier lights our carnival life on the water
Runnin' down the beach at night with my boss's daughter
Well he ain't my boss no more Sandy
Sandy, the angels have lost our desire for us
I spoke to 'em just last night and they said they won't set themselves on fire for us anymore
Every summer when the weather gets hot they ride that road down from heaven
On their Harleys they come and they go
And you can see 'em dressed like stars
In all the cheap little seashore bars
Parked making love with their babies out on the Kokomo
Well the cops finally busted Madame Marie for tellin' fortunes better than they do
This boardwalk life for me is through
You know you ought to quit this scene too
Sandy the aurora's rising behind us,
Sandy, le jour se lève derrière nous
The pier lights our carnival life forever
Oh love me tonight and I promise I'll love you forever

I love the Jersey shore...yes, I was born and raised in South Jersey and going to the beaches in the summer is ingrained in my memories...listening to this wonderful artist named Bruce Springsteen. I just turned 63 on June 28th 2023. I wished to God that I could turn back time just for a short while.... I know that I'm not alone in those thoughts. Happy 4th of July everyone.

I might be in the minority but I think this is Springsteen’s greatest song. It’s perfect. The lyrics are so dazzling and descriptive. That last verse gives me chills every time

Paul Viastra

I agree. I never liked bruce... especially after he became known as "obama girl's bathroom bruce". This is one of two or three of his songs I like. It's actually a great "love song". He kinda dumped Sandy & now he's begging her to come back.

Lighting in a bottle, Sandy 4th of July Asbury Park captures the essence of all those summer nights and sweet, sweet teenage angst. Listening, I am back at the boardwalk, her hand on my arm, I can almost touch the sand on her skin, catch the scent of Coppertone suntan lotion, sea salt and sweat commingled and infused by the sun and the warmth of her skin and feel the tingle of gooseflesh as I drape my windbreaker around her bare shoulders... the breeze, the calls of the gulls and the carnival carousel sounds and all those spirits in the night... 🎠🎡

Amazing! I just need to catch my breath. For a few minutes I am in 1975 again.

TheFarmrBoy

hands down one of the most underrated springsteen songs out there. the emotion bruce puts into his songs is almost unbelievable. god how I wish I was born 30 years earlier.

Jacob Ladin

early springsteen often gets overlooked, but in my opinion these were his best.. he paints a picture with every song
