Break My Heart
Bruce Springsteen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

First time I crossed my heart
I was begging baby please
At your bedside
Down on my knees
When I crossed my heart
When I crossed my heart
I crossed my heart,
Pretty baby over you

Second time I crossed my heart
Rain came in from the south
I was lying there with something sweet and salty in my mouth
When I crossed my heart
When I crossed my heart
When I crossed my heart, pretty darling over you.

Well you may think the world's black and white
And you're dirty or you're clean, son
You better watch out you don't slip
Through them spaces in between

Well the night gets sticky
And the sky gets black
I grabbed you baby, and you grabbed me back
And we crossed our hearts
Mmm we crossed our hearts
Yeah, I crossed my heart
Mmh

Well little boys little girls
Hell they don't know wrongs from their rights,
And once you cross your heart, you ain't ever supposed to lie
Well life ain't nothing but a cold, hard ride
I ain't leaving til I'm satisfied.
I cross my heart
Yeah I cross my heart
Well I cross my heart
Pretty darling over you

Ooh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bruce Springsteen's "Cross My Heart" are about the power of love and the promises that come along with it. The song details Springsteen's experiences of crossing his heart, a gesture that symbolizes his vow to devote himself to his beloved. The first time he crossed his heart, he was on his knees begging for forgiveness and a chance to be with the woman he loves. The second time he did it, he was lying with his lover, and the rain and their passion were blending together. Springsteen emphasizes how crossing the heart is a powerful and meaningful commitment to staying devoted to someone he loves.

The lyrics are also reflective of the ambiguity that comes with love, where everything isn’t just black and white, and one can easily slip through spaces in between. Even though someone might be dirty or clean, when two people love each other, they can always find a way to hold onto each other, even when it is dark and sticky outside. In the end, Springsteen reminds his listeners that crossing one's heart represents a lifelong commitment to remain true to the ones they love.

My husband died in July last year, far too early, we loved signing this song together, especially when we drove into Baltimore and this came on the radio. Sadness and joy with this song.

@JohnBarrylizard

Sorry for your loss.

My daughters favourite Bruce Springsteen song. She was 11 years old and we played it at her funeral. Taken from us far too soon. We love you Angel, keep singing and dancing in heaven xxx

@NitishSinghchin2

My condolences. She is in a much better place now.

@Sianybosh

@@NitishSinghchin2 Thank you, I just wish she was here with me. It’s very hard to believe she is in a better place if we don’t know where she is? I’m not a religious person, but I do believe our soul goes somewhere else. Xx

@NitishSinghchin2

It's an unimaginable loss. But, as my mother always says - Time is the best healer. Stay strong. Stay positive. Better times are yet to come.

@Sianybosh

@@NitishSinghchin2 it’s very hard to see there will ever be better times ahead, maybe easier but never better than when my daughter was alive. She was also my best friend and we did everything together

@westslopesandra

Sorry that you lost your daughter. Glad that you could play that song for her and that you had a relationship with her that you knew that...

My father loved this song. He passed away in June last year. Today I was working on his house fixing it up for the first time since his passing. While playing music on my aux cord my car randomly switched to the radio station which has never happened before and the aux cord did not disconnect. I believe this was him giving me a sign to listen to this song and know that he’s there and proud of what I’m doing for my family.
