Great Balls of Fire
Bruce Springsteen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You shake my nerves and you rattle my brain
Too much love drives a man insane
You broke my will, oh what a thrill
Goodness gracious great balls of fire

I learned to love all of Hollywood money
You came along and you moved me honey
I changed my mind, looking fine
Goodness gracious great balls of fire

You kissed me baby, woo, it feels good
Hold me baby
Learn to let me love you like a lover should
You're fine, so kind
I'm a nervous world that your
Mine mine mine mine

I cut my nails and I twiddle my thumbs
I'm really nervous but it sure is fun
Come on baby, you drive me crazy
Goodness gracious great balls of fire

Well kiss me baby, woo oooooo, it feels good
Hold me baby
I want to love you like a lover should
You're fine, so kind
I got this world that your
Mine mine mine mine

I cut my nails and I twiddle my thumbs
I'm real nervous 'cause it sure is fun

Come on baby, you drive me crazy
Goodness gracious great balls of fire

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bruce Springsteen's version of "Great Balls of Fire" are actually a cover of the original song by Jerry Lee Lewis. The song is a classic rock and roll tune that is all about the rush and excitement of being in love. The first verse describes the physical effects that love can have on a person, comparing them to the explosive excitement of a fire. The lines "You shake my nerves and you rattle my brain, too much love drives a man insane" capture the overwhelming feeling of being in love with someone.

The second verse talks about how the singer's perspective on money and material possessions changed when they fell in love with the person they are singing to. Lines like "I learned to love all of Hollywood money, you came along and you moved me honey" show how someone's priorities can shift when they find someone they truly care about. The chorus repeats the phrase "Goodness gracious great balls of fire" throughout, emphasizing the excitement and passion of being in love.

The song also features some classic rock and roll tropes, such as the repeated line "I'm a nervous world that your mine mine mine mine" and the reference to nail-biting and thumb-twiddling. These parts of the song capture the youthful energy of early rock and roll and the sense of being completely consumed by love.

When I was in high school (in the 80's), there was some silly unwritten, but well understood rule, that you could only be a Mellencamp fan or a Springstein fan - but not both. I'm really enjoying watching these two perform together. (I am a Mellencamp fan).
