Highway Patrolman
Bruce Springsteen Lyrics

My name is Joe Roberts, I work for the state
I'm a sergeant out of Perrineville, barracks number eight
I always done an honest job, as honest as I could
I got a brother named Franky, and Franky ain't no good

Now ever since we was young kids, it's been the same come down
I get a call on the shortwave, Franky's in trouble downtown
Well if it was any other man, I'd put him straight away
But when it's your brother sometimes you look the other way

Yeah, me and Franky laughin' and drinkin', nothin' feels better than blood on blood
Takin' turns dancin' with Maria as the band played "Night of the Johnstown Flood"
I catch him when he's strayin', like any brother would
Man turns his back on his family, well, he just ain't no good

Well, Franky went in the army back in nineteen sixty-five
I got a farm deferment, settled down, took Maria for my wife
But them wheat prices kept on droppin' 'til it was like we were gettin' robbed
Franky came home in sixty-eight and me I took this job

Yeah, we're laughin' and drinkin', nothin' feels better than blood on blood
Takin' turns dancin' with Maria as the band played "Night of the Johnstown Flood"
I catch him when he's strayin', teach him how to walk that line
Man turns his back on his family, he ain't no friend of mine

Well, the night was like any other, I got a call 'bout quarter to nine
There was trouble in a roadhouse out on the Michigan line
There was a kid lyin' on the floor lookin' bad, bleedin' hard from his head
Was a girl cryin' at a table and it was Frank, they said

Well, I went out and I jumped in my car and I hit the lights
Well, I musta done a hundred and ten through Michigan County that night
It was out at the crossroads, down 'round Willow bank
Seen a Buick with Ohio plates, behind the wheel was Frank

Well I chased him through them county roads
'Til a sign said "Canadian border five miles from here"
I pulled over the side of the highway and watched his taillights disappear

Me and Franky laughin' and drinkin', nothin' feels better than blood on blood
Takin' turns dancin' with Maria as the band played "Night of the Johnstown Flood"

I catch him when he's strayin' like any brother would
Man turns his back on his family, he just ain't no good

Overall Meaning

The song Highway Patrolman by Bruce Springsteen tells the story of Joe Roberts, a police sergeant who is torn between his loyalty towards his duty and his love for his younger brother, Franky. Joe has always been honest in his job as a sergeant in Perrineville, barracks number 8. However, his brother Franky has not always been on the right side of the law. Whenever Franky gets into trouble, Joe often looks past the rules he is meant to enforce, and helps his brother out.

The loyalty of brothers is a central theme in this song, and reflects the often-complicated dynamic between siblings. The chorus of the song emphasizes the bond between family members and the power this bond holds. Joe's love for Franky is unwavering, even though Franky may not always be deserving of it.

The song is also a commentary on the restrictions that come with authority, and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold the law. The song recognizes the internal conflict faced by police officers who have to make tough decisions about their family and the laws they are meant to enforce.

My brother and I were polar opposites in just about every way, but at the end of the day there wasn’t anything stopping us from sharing a beer together, and laughing the night away.

He passed away about two years ago from a drug overdose. I always come back to this song, and it makes me think of him. That no matter what darkness he was traveling through, at the end of the day he was still my brother, through thick and thin. I’ll always miss him.

@E_Chap

Cheers to your brother man. I'm sorry he took that path, but it sounds like you guys had some good memories.
