Lady and the Doctor
Bruce Springsteen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The lady keeps the doctor in
A place inside her pocket
The circle made of silver like a wheel
The doctor gives a strange love
But the lady she don't knock it
She's glad to get a piece of anything
Because the lady needs the medicine he brings
Doctor needs the lady to see
The doctor keeps the lady in a page in a book
On the history of communicable diseases
The lady's been to school
She lets the doctor play it cool
He writes the script, she follows his lead
'Cause the doctor writes love story so fine
The lady's learned to read between the lines
Sometimes the doctor
He takes house calls where
He visit's the animals in their stalls
Shoots them full of juice and then goes home
The lady hit's the supermarket
Where she rides
The aisles in a shopping cart
'till she feels she's played enough of
The part to get by ooh
The lady feels it's enough to just be good
But the doctor has his need to be understood
The doctor feels he's so abused and
The lady feels she's so unused
And demands the doctor tends her daily parts
Ooh, but the doctor just can't do it
Because so long ago the lady blew it
They're too old now to make another start

The lady feels the doctor's made of stone
The doctor' heart, it just ain't found a home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bruce Springsteen's song "Lady and the Doctor" tell a story of a complicated relationship between a lady and her doctor. The lady keeps the doctor close to her, like a circle made of silver wreath in her pocket. She needs the medicine and strange love that the doctor provides, and he needs her to keep coming back to him. The doctor keeps the lady in a page in a book on the history of communicable diseases, but she's been to school and lets him play it cool. He writes the love story between them, and she's learned to read between the lines.

The lady and the doctor have different needs in the relationship - the lady just wants to be good enough, and the doctor wants to be understood. They both feel abused and unused in their own ways. The lady keeps up her daily farce, but the doctor can't do it anymore. They both know it's too late to start over, and the lady feels like the doctor's heart is made of stone. But he's still looking for a home - maybe with her, but he's not sure.

I love Springsteen! Found this off a tweet that talked about B2R being released thirty-eight years ago today. If Bruce ever reads this, I moved out of Jersey come visit me in Denver sometime.

most of which never get released if you look around here you could probably easily find a dozen similar or revised versions of studio tracks that were all part of that writing process he throws out more decent lyrics than most artist write in their careers so that may explain Mary queen of Arkansas and this one seeming similar hope that helped

queen of the supermarket came out in 2009 on working on a dream this was recorded somewhere between 72' and 73' if its a greetings from Asbury Park NJ outtake so it couldn't be in reference to queen of the supermarket maybe the other way around but i don't think that's the case either as far as being similar to Mary queen of Arkansas that could be attributed to his writing style he starts with one line of a song and builds on that until he has several songs all branched from the original idea

@sharpshooterrn I don't think so. This song is awesome. .."but the doctor has this need to be understood" ...these lyrics are incredible. Similar to Mary Queen, but not the same song. How about the reference to "the lady riding in th ailses in a shopping cart...is the a reference to Queen of the Super Maketmarket?
