When The Saints Go Marching In
Bruce Springsteen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We are all traveling in the footsteps
Of those that'd come before
And we'll all be reunited
On that new and sunlit shore

When the Saints go marching in
When the Saints go marching in
Lord, how I want to be in that number
When the Saints go marching in

And when the sun refuses to shine
When the sun refuses to shine
Lord, how I want to be in that number
When the Saints go marching in

Oh, when the Saints go marching in
Oh, when the Saints go marching in
Oh, how I want to be there on that morning
When the Saints go marching in

When the trumpet sounds its call
When the trumpet sounds its call
Oh, how I want be in that number
When the trumpet sounds its call

Oh, when the Saints go marching in
When the Saints go marching in
Lord, how I want to be in that number
Oh, when the Saints go marching in

Now some say, some say this world of trouble
Is the only world we'll ever see
But I'm waiting for that morning
When the new world is revealed

Oh, when the new world is revealed
Oh, when the new world is revealed
Lord, how I want to be there on that morning
When the new world is revealed

Oh, when the Saints (oh, when the Saints)
Go marching in (marching in)
When the Saints go marching in
Lord, I want be in that number
When the Saints go marching in

Lord, how I want (Lord, how I want)
To be in that number (to be in that number)
When the Saints go marching in

Overall Meaning

The song "When The Saints Go Marching In" by Bruce Springsteen is a gospel-inspired track that explores the theme of reuniting with our loved ones and the saints that have passed away. The first verse of the song sets the tone for the rest of the lyrics, as Springsteen sings about how we are all following in the footsteps of those who came before us, and how we will be reunited on a new and sunlit shore. This idea of reuniting with our loved ones after death is further explored in the chorus, with Springsteen expressing his desire to be in the number of those who are welcomed into heaven when the saints go marching in.

The second verse of the song takes on a more apocalyptic tone, with Springsteen singing about a time when the sun refuses to shine. Despite this darkness, however, his desire to be in the number of those who are welcomed into heaven remains constant. The final verse of the song shifts the focus to the new world that will be revealed to us, with Springsteen once again expressing his desire to be there on that morning.

Overall, "When The Saints Go Marching In" is a powerful and thought-provoking song that deals with themes of death, loss, and the afterlife.

Estamos todos viajando nas pegadas
Daqueles que vieram antes
E todos nós estaremos reunidos
Naquela costa nova e ensolarada

Quando o novo mundo for revelado
Oh, quando o novo mundo for revelado
Oh, quando o novo mundo for revelado
Sim, eu quero estar lá naquela manhã
Quando o novo mundo for revelado
Oh, quando os santos vão marchando
Quando os santos estiverem marchando
Senhor, como eu quero estar nesse número
Quando os santos estiverem marchando
Mais uma vez
Quando os santos estiverem marchando
Vá marchando
Quando os santos estiverem marchando
Vá marchando
Senhor, eu quero estar nesse número
Esteja nesse número
Quando os santos estiverem marchando
Vá marchando
Senhor, como eu quero
Senhor, como eu quero
Esteja nesse número
Estar nesse número

This song has great sentimental value to me. When my cousins and I were kids we would sit on their stoop and sing this on the top of our lungs. Why? I don't think we ever knew. We are in our seventies and sixties now, two of us have passed on. I cherish those times.

@vcavaliere

That's not only one of the best musical performances I've witnessed but a beautiful historical document dedicated to New Orleans .... Thank You Bruce ! !
