Born To Run
Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band/Bruce Springsteen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the day we sweat it out in the streets of a runaway American dream
At night we ride through mansions of glory in suicide machines
Sprung from cages out on highway 9,
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected
And steppin' out over the line

Baby this town rips the bones from your back
It's a death trap, it's a suicide rap
We gotta get out while we're young
`Cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run

Wendy let me in I want to be your friend
I want to guard your dreams and visions
Just wrap your legs 'round these velvet rims
And strap your hands across my engines

Together we could break this trap
We'll run till we drop, baby we'll never go back
Will you walk with me out on the wire
`Cause baby I'm just a scared and lonely rider

But I gotta find out how it feels
I want to know if love is wild
Girl I want to know if love is real

Beyond the Palace hemi-powered drones scream down the boulevard
The girls comb their hair in rearview mirrors
And the boys try to look so hard
The amusement park rises bold and stark

Kids are huddled on the beach in a mist
I want to die with you Wendy on the streets tonight
In an everlasting kiss

The highway's jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive
Everybody's out on the run tonight
But there's no place left to hide
Together Wendy we'll live with the sadness

I'll love you with all the madness in my soul
Someday girl I don't know when
We're gonna get to that place
Where we really want to go

And we'll walk in the sun

But till then tramps like us
Baby we were born to run

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Bruce Springsteen's "Born To Run" begins by describing the American Dream as a "runaway" dream which the lyricist and his peers are "sweating" out in the streets every day. But at night, they ride through mansions in "suicide machines" with chrome wheels, fuel injection and stepping out over the line. The chorus, "Baby this town rips the bones from your back," reflects the pervasive sense of entrapment and desperation, calling the town a "death trap" and a "suicide rap." To escape, they must "get out while we're young" because they were "born to run," setting up the song's central message of youthful rebellion.

The second verse introduces Wendy, an idealized love interest to whom the singer promises to be a friend, guard her dreams and visions, and "run till we drop." He asks if she will walk with him "out on the wire," because he's just a "scared and lonely rider" who must "find out how it feels." In the bridge, Springsteen describes the landscape, with "hemi-powered drones" speeding down the boulevard, the amusement park "rising bold and stark," and "broken heroes on a last chance power drive" jamming the highways. Finally, he promises "to love you with all the madness in my soul," and the song ends with the hope that someday they'll find a place where they "really want to go" and walk together in the sun.

In the day we sweat it out on the streets
Of a runaway American dream
At night we ride through the mansions of glory
In suicide machines
Sprung from cages on Highway 9
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected, and steppin' out over the line
Oh, baby this town rips the bones from your back
It's a death trap, it's a suicide rap
We gotta get out while we're young
'Cause tramps like us, baby, we were born to run
Yes, girl, we were

Wendy, let me in, I wanna be your friend
I wanna guard your dreams and visions
Just wrap your legs 'round these velvet rims
And strap your hands 'cross my engines
Together we could break this trap
We'll run 'til we drop, baby, we'll never go back
Oh, will you walk with me out on the wire?
'Cause, baby, I'm just a scared and lonely rider
But I gotta know how it feels
I want to know if love is wild
Babe, I want to know if love is real
Oh, can you show me

Beyond the Palace, hemi-powered drones
Scream down the boulevard
Girls comb their hair in rearview mirrors
And the boys try to look so hard
The amusement park rises bold and stark
Kids are huddled on the beach in the mist
I wanna die with you, Wendy, on the street tonight

Oh, someday, girl, I don't know when
We're gonna get to that place
Where we really wanna go and we'll walk in the sun
But 'til then, tramps like us
Baby, we were born to run

Oh honey, tramps like us
Baby, we were born to run
Come on with me, tramps like us
Baby, we were born to run

How in God's name can anyone write a song like that at the age of 24/25 years is unbelievable. The greatest songwriter of our age! Must have heard Born to run 20 plus times live, you know what's coming, you know gonna happen, but it still blows your mind when the first and last chord is struck. Thanks for the ride, Bruce.

@user-sw4vi8bn6o

He wrote it at the age of 23! He said he wanted to write the greatest R&R song of all time! His quote, I think he succeeded!!

@MrJonpac

Only 20 times. I listen 20 times a day

@Char_H

I had to put my dog down during the summer of 2022, she had completely deteriorated and couldn’t really walk anymore. Her passing completely shattered my heart as she has been a major part of my life. As I’m driving away from the vets office this song starts playing and I just start bawling, this song gave me so much comfort in that moment and I felt like she was finally able to run again and be free. What an amazing song perfect for an amazing dog like her <3
