The River
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band Lyrics

Where, mister, when you're young
They bring you up to do like your daddy done
Me and Mary we met in high school
When she was just seventeen
We drive out of this valley
Down to where the fields were green
We'd go down to the river
Oh, down to the river we'd ride
Then I got Mary pregnant
And man, that was all she wrote
And for my nineteenth birthday
I got a union card and a wedding coat
We went down to the courthouse
And the judge put it all to rest
No wedding day smiles, no walk down the aisle
No flowers, no wedding dress
That night we went down to the river
And into the river we'd dive
Oh, down to the river we did ride
Yeah, yeah
I got a job working construction
For the Johnstown Company
But lately there ain't been much work
On account of the economy
Now all them things that seemed so important
Well mister they vanished right into the air
Now I just act like I don't remember
Mary acts like she don't care
But I remember us riding in my brother's car
Her body tan and wet, down at the reservoir
At night on them banks I'd lie awake
And pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take
Now those memories come back to haunt me
They haunt me like a curse
Is a dream a lie if it don't come true
Or is it something worse
That sends me down to the river
Though I know the river is dry
That sends me down to the river tonight
Down to the river
My baby and I
Oh, down to the river we ride-ide
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
The River by Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band tells a story of a young couple from a working-class background living in a small valley. The singer, who is now looking back on his life, reminisces about his teenage years where he meets Mary at high school. They fall in love and drive out of the valley to a place where the fields are green. They go down to the river and dive in it. However, life changes when the singer gets Mary pregnant, and they end up getting married in a courthouse with no wedding day smiles, no flowers, and no wedding dress. They still go down to the river but not for pleasure as memories of their past come back to haunt them. Despite knowing the river is dry, they still go down there as it is a reminder of what once was, of their youth.
The River is a reflective song about the struggles of the working-class people, their dreams, and aspirations that don't come to fruition. The song focuses on the singer's disillusionment with the world and his resignation to his fate. The river symbolizes the hope, dreams, and aspirations that he once had, but now it is dry, reflecting the reality of his situation. The song is a classic example of Springsteen's ability to tell stories that are relatable, emotional, and thought-provoking, capturing the essence of the lives of ordinary people.

My dad got me into The Boss in a big way, we used to listen to him every car trip, we managed to see him twice live together. He passed away this year and this was our favourite song and this was our favourite version of it, the beginning is very poignant. Weird how songs can make you happy and sad at the same time

David I'm glad you got to go to see Bruce with your Dad. Every now and then I play Bruce when my Daughter is in the room with me, I'm trying to get her into the Boss' music - a work in progress.
