Bruno confessed that “Talking to the Moon” is his favorite song from the record, commenting it on Sound on Sound:
“Talking To The Moon” is one of my favourite songs on the album. We only had the first verse and the horns, but we knew that it was great. We then had three different bridges and we spent a lot of time trying to find out which one was the best. Jeff Bhasker is a fantastic musician, and he helped write that track. I think we tried to arrange and produce this in four different ways, mostly trying to figure out what kind of drums to put on.

Somewhere far away
I want you back
I want you back
My neighbors think, I'm crazy
But they don't understand
You're all I have
You're all I have
At night when the stars light up my room
I sit by myself
Talking to the moon
Trying to get to you
In hopes you're on the other side talking to me too
Or am I a fool, who sits alone, talking to the moon?
I'm feeling like I'm famous, the talk of the town
They say I've gone mad
Yeah, I've gone mad
But they don't know what I know
'Cause when the sun goes down someone's talking back
Yeah, they're talking back, oh
At night when the stars light up my room
I sit by myself
Talking to the moon
Trying to get to you
In hopes you're on the other side talking to me too
Or am I a fool, who sits alone, talking to the moon?
Do you ever hear me calling?
Oh oh oh, oh oh oh
Still trying to get to you
In hopes you're on the other side talking to me too
Or am I a fool, who sits alone, talking to the moon?
I know you're somewhere out there
Somewhere far away
In Bruno Mars's song Talking to the Moon, he expresses his deep yearning for his loved one who is far away, he longs to have her back. Bruno acknowledges that his neighbors may perceive him as crazy because he spends his time talking to the moon, but he only does it because he misses and loves his significant other so much. Mars feels like he has gone mad since he cannot belong to anyone else but this person he is talking to the moon about, and he knows that the sun going down means there is someone else talking back. Despite all the odds, everything comes back to Brunos's heart seeking his lover's. He is unsure whether he is just wasting his energy by talking to the moon, but he does it anyway in the hopes of reaching his loved one on the other side who may be talking to him too.
