The song first appeared on the A Night in Heaven soundtrack album in 1983 and was later included on Adams' album Reckless in 1984. It was released as the third single from Reckless and reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June 1985, over a year and a half after the song first appeared on record. The single was certified Gold in Canada in 1985.

Adams recorded "Heaven" at The Power Station in New York City on June 6 and 7, 1983.

Adams didn't think "Heaven" was suitable for Reckless, a feeling that was echoed by producer Jimmy Iovine, who was working with Adams at the time. Iovine thought the song was too 'light' for the album and recommended that Adams not include it. At the last moment, Adams changed his mind.

Half way through the recording session drummer Mickey Curry announced that he had to leave since he committed in advance to a Hall & Oates session. Curry had warned Adams about his limited availability that day. The recording session for "Heaven" was running behind schedule and Adams called Journey drummer Steve Smith. Smith happened to be in New York at the time and he filled Curry's drumming position.

While writing "Heaven", Adams and Vallance were influenced by Journey's music and lyrical style, particular their song "Faithfully".

In 1984 "Heaven" won the Procan Award (Performing Rights Organization of Canada) for Canadian radio airplay, in 1985 it won the BMI (Broadcast Music Inc.) Citation of Achievement for U.S. radio airplay and ten years later it won a Socan Classics Award for more than 100,000 Canadian radio performances.

This was my wife’s favorite song. She said it was our song and it was. The night I proposed to her, at an Italian restaurant at dinner with our 2 best friends, I had made an arrangement with the restaurant manager to play this for me over their audio system and told him why. When the song started playing she stopped in mid sentence and paused, then said she loved this song as she had told me before. I was sitting there while the song played waiting for the right moment. The manager dimmed the lights except the ones around our table. She looked around the restaurant as if wondering what had happened and then looked at me. I was shaking when I stood up and got down on one knee and told her she was the light of my life, I’d never love anyone as I did her and my only goal for the rest of my life was to make her happy if she’ll just make me the happiest man and marry me. I was so nervous because I knew in my heart she was the only one for me. She said yes and started to cry as I took her hand and put on the ring. She took my hand as I stood up to kiss her. All the patrons applauded us. It was magical as was my love for her. We had a beautiful 16 years of life together. She was my best friend and I’m so in love with her still today. Sadly, I lost her to a drunk driver accident in 2004. They told me she was killed instantly. My life has never been anything remotely the same. Still today, after all these years, when I hear this song, it is a reminder of our love and the torture in my heart that she was taken from me so brutally. I love you, Paula. Now and forever.

Me personally without thinking, in the 80's colours of nature were more natural and pure, weather was weather, we actually had proper seasons, food and drinks were much better - everything tasted natural and non metalic and non plastic, you were sure that you're eating a real food and not some shit mixed in some shitty lab with some shit chemicals. Music was fantastic, and pure, some of my most beautiful memories are in 1980's. Nowadays kids are empty, egoistic, lame and fake...we had to wait for another music clip for hours to show, or to watch our favorite tv show every week, we were eager to find something, to develop, to create, to understand - really understant - nowadays everything is instant, overhyped and shitty, and everything is forgotten the very first minute it's over, no matter how overhyped junk it is.
