+babyansel We will start by looking at the instruments made of pitched bars that are laid out like a piano keyboard and are struck with mallets. The biggest of these instruments are the marimbas, which had two musicians (on each of the two marimbas). The marimba also has wooden bars and metal tubes underneath the bars to fill out the sound. There were three instruments with metal bars. The smallest one (which had very shiny bars) is called a glockenspiel (or oftentimes in the US, the orchestra bells). The glockenspiel doesn't have tubes underneath its bars, as the tubes would need to be very short and narrow. The other two had very dull bars and were much bigger. These are vibraphones and are called so because a pedal can unmute the bars allowing greater resonance with the tubes under the bars while a motor opens and closes the tubes, creating a "vibrato" effect. The small brass (possibly bronze) disks that were laid out in the same fashion as the bars of a marimba are called the crotales (or antique cymbals). These play in the same octave as the glockenspiel and have a definite pitch (unlike large cymbals), but have more of a rough character. The tall, silver pipes that played the "clock hour chime" go by many names. Their three most common names are the chimes, the tubular bells, and the church bells, as they are meant to sound like church bells, but are tubular and look like very large, mounted wind chimes. The four large. brown drums with beige heads are called timpani (timpano is the singular form of timpani). The timpani are unique in that they are one of the few drums that can be tuned to a specific pitch and the timpani are tuned by using an attached foot pedal. The other instruments are all unpitched instruments. The very large drum that is held sideways is called the bass drum. The smaller drum that sounds like it belongs in a parade or a military band is called a snare drum. The symbal right next to the snare drum is called a suspended cymbal.
