Mona Lisa
Bryan Clark Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You're so like the lady with the mystic smile
Is it only cause you're lonely they have blamed you
For that Mona Lisa strangeness in your smile
Do you smile to tempt a lover Mona Lisa?
Or is this your way to hide a broken heart?
Many dreams have been brought to your doorstep
They just lie there, and they die there
Or just a cold and lonely, lovely work of art.
Do you smile to tempt a lover Mona Lisa?
Or is this your way to hide a broken heart?
Many dreams have been brought to your doorstep
They just lie there, and they die there
Are you warm, are you real Mona Lisa?
Or just a cold and lonely, lovely work of art.
Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa.
The lyrics of Bryan Clark's song Mona Lisa are a profound observation of the infamous painting by Leonardo da Vinci. The song opens with the line "Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa men have named you, you're so like the lady with the mystic smile." The reference here is to the iconic painting of a seated woman, most commonly known as Mona Lisa, which has been admired for centuries for its enigmatic beauty. The lyrics suggest that her smile is what sets her apart from other portraits of women from that time. The second line of the song "Is it only cause you're lonely they have blamed you, for that Mona Lisa strangeness in your smile" reflects on the fact that the painting was made during a time of isolation for Leonardo da Vinci, something that could have affected the painting and made it unique.
The next lines question whether the smile of the painting is simply an attempt to lure in a lover, or is it a mask to hide a broken heart. "Do you smile to tempt a lover Mona Lisa? Or is this your way to hide a broken heart?" These lines suggest that the painting may have been a projection of da Vinci's own emotions, and that the smile itself may have been a way that da Vinci coped with his own loneliness.
The final lines of the song "Many dreams have been brought to your doorstep, they just lie there, and they die there. Are you warm, are you real Mona Lisa? Or just a cold and lonely, lovely work of art." serve as a metaphor warning against the dangers of idolizing external beauty and art over genuine human connections. The lyrics suggest that the painting may be nothing more than a cold work of art, and that the dreams brought to it cannot sustain themselves.
