All I Want Is You
Bryan Ferry (with Roxy Music) Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That you're leaving me, we're through
Well if you knew how it hurt me so
Then you'd change your mind, I'm sure
Don't want to hear what's going on
I don't care what's new
Don't want to know about anything
Cause all I want is you
But since I fell in love with you I need you more and more
Don't want to know about one-night-stands, cut-price souvenirs
All I want is the real thing and a night that lasts for years
If you ever change your mind I've a certain cure
An old refrain it lingers on l'amour, toujour l'amour
Don't want to learn about etiquette
From glossy magazines
Why should I try to talk correct
like they do in other scenes
Say no more about imagery
You're starting to confuse
Just make an offer of more romance
Of course I can't refuse
All I want is you
Oo oo I'm all cracked up on you
These lyrics express the singer's desperation to hold onto their love interest, despite hearing rumors that they are leaving the singer. The singer is so in love with this person that they cannot imagine being with anyone else. They are willing to overlook any other potential distractions or temptations, such as one-night-stands or fleeting, cheap novelties. The singer values the genuine, long-lasting love that they have with this person above all else. They even suggest that the only "cure" for their love would be to fall in love again, referencing the French phrase "l'amour, toujours l'amour" ("love, always love"). This phrase emphasizes the singer's belief that real love is worth fighting and suffering for, and that they will always want this person, no matter what.
Overall, the song emphasizes a certain purity and intensity of love that the singer is desperate to maintain. They don't care about what's in fashion or what other people are doing, and they are willing to forgive any hurt that their love interest may have caused them, as long as they stay in love. The song is very romantic and idealistic, and captures a youthful hopefulness or naivete about true love.

He's wearing jeans and a tee-shirt, and still Bryan Ferry looks 100% f***ing stylish!
@bhdctn
As an American born in 67 I just delved into RM during the pandemic. I am BLOWN AWAY by Roxy Music! My favorite album by them is a 3 way tie between For Your Pleasure, Stranded and Country Life. Why they weren't popular in the States in the 72 onward time frame is beyond me! ♥️ Roxy Music

Simply because as an art rock vanguard, they defy categorisation. American music didn't where to fit them in

Better late than never.

Possibly too esoteric for the U.S. audience, too artsy. Much of Bryan Ferry's persona was a bit tongue in cheek and possibly too subtle for mass success here, though everyone of a certain generation in the UK knows them, without exception. Bear in mind, they haven't released any new material in 40 years.
@sea6bear
I was introduced to them in college freshman year 72… saw the live touring the Country life album , maybe 400 people at the Leona theater in pittsburgh. They were memorable.
@brianatkinson2918
@sea6bear I saw them Friday just gone at the 02, they were the dog's.

Dang! This cat makes even a t-shirt & jeans look good.
@offbeat65
@Martin S. –I very much doubt Springsteen needed an English dandy to turn him to the idea of blue jeans and t-shirt, the standard attire for the average American guy he came to symbolize.

And that sax player 😻
