Tokyo Joe
Bryan Ferry (with Roxy Music) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My girl Friday she no square
She like lotus blossom in her hair
Be-bop records and something new
Sometimes borrowed but she's never blue
Oh no
Not Tokyo Joe

Way past midnight, she not home
She cut the ice down the Danger Zone
Water-tight dresses, she don't care
A trifle risque, a tart, no sir
Oh no
Sounds like Tokyo Joe

Geisha girl show you she adore you
Two oriental eyes implore you
Femme fatale or ingenue?
She very cunning, fiendish clever
Geisha girl suffer many times a fool
Sayonara moon

When all the world's a stage, oh where are you?
Tokyo Rose on the radio
Or Diz and Bird puttin' on the moan
Tappin' out telexes to Tupelo
Dear John, doh ray me fah so?
Let's go
Call for Tokyo Joe

Walkin' tall down the Danger Zone
She hokey-cokey till the cows come home
Big shot, from the hip, neon cool
Say, when you've been around, what's left to do?
Don't know? Ask Tokyo Joe
So inscrutable her reply
"Ask no question and tell me no lie"
GI boys howlin' out for more

VIP'S purrin' "je t'adore"
Ah so, that's Tokyo Joe

Overall Meaning

Tokyo Joe is a song that portrays the life of an adventurous woman who isn't afraid to go out and explore the world. The song starts by introducing "My girl Friday" as someone who is not like everyone else. She's different, just like a lotus blossom in her hair. She is always ready to try something new and exciting, and sometimes she borrows ideas from others. However, she never gets sad or depressed, and she is always happy to take on the next adventure. Then, the line "Oh no, not Tokyo Joe" is repeated, indicating that she is a unique, independent woman who is fearless and always up for a challenge.

As the song progresses, the lyrics reveal that My girl Friday is out late into the night and does not care about being proper. The repetition of the phrase "Sounds like Tokyo Joe" reinforces the idea that she does not conform to society's expectations. The song also references a geisha girl who is both a femme fatale and an ingenue. She is cunning and very clever - this line indicates that the geisha girl is seductive and uses her feminine charms to manipulate men. The song is full of references to other cultures, like the Geisha girl, Tokyo Rose, and Diz and Bird, which create a sense of international intrigue and glamor.

@Johnny Hartley the obvious Charlie Chan Melody playing in the background every time Bryan ferry sings the chorus "Tokyo Joe"
I mean, it doesn't age well at all.... Just like the Charlie Chan movies themselves.. I don't think you should cancel it or ban it. ... I just think it's creepy to watch.
And I just saw the Roxy Music Reunion tour this summer, so I don't have a beef against Bryan ferry either.
It's just not a good idea for a song nowadays, and it's not that good of a song. Lot of other musicians I respect have done some real blunders and their musical past as well.
The song African man by Iggy Pop on his album new values.
That one is pretty raw racist. Even mentioned bananas.
Otherwise New Values is one of my favorite Iggy Pop albums.

Yeah so this Bryan ferry song Tokyo Joe is about as bad as African man by Iggy Pop .
