Lonely
Bubble Puppy Lyrics

Platinum and gold
Lonely I was waiting
For your return
Sheltered from the dawn's light
Hidden all around
Lonely I was listening
In my silent sorrow
I must turn away
Lonely now,
The debt has been repaid
The lyrics to Bubble Puppy's Lonely describe the experience of waiting and waiting for someone who never returns, leading to a sense of loneliness and sorrow. The first two lines refer to a place of wealth and prosperity, which could symbolize a desired destination or goal that the songwriter has yet to reach. The repeated use of the word "lonely" underscores the sense of isolation and abandonment that the vocalist feels, even in a place of great beauty and wealth.
The next two lines speak to the singer's physical and emotional state, sheltered and hidden in the darkness. The use of the phrase "hidden all around" suggests a sense of confusion or disorientation, as if the singer is lost in a labyrinth. Still, the singer remains fixated on the idea of hearing something or receiving some kind of sign from the outside world that would signal their return.
The final verse reveals that the singer has come to terms with the fact that they will never receive the desired response, causing them to turn away from their longing and accept the debt of loneliness that has been repaid. While the interpretation of the lyrics might vary from person to person, there is an undeniable sense of sadness and resignation that pervades this evocative tune.

I really admired the group. It perked my ears when I heard the first drone and intro of Sassafrass. I think I liked this B side better though.Their songs meant something instead of just trippy dippy pop fluff. Did not think I would ever hear this one ever again after I lost my 45's and albums in a fire about 1970. Thanks I searched and found it. Beautiful memories

This sounds like a cut from one of their albums and not from the original 45, however it's still one of the best B-sides from the late great swinging 60s. Back in the 1960s a lot of groups would record two versions of an A-side and B-side. One for the original 45rpm release and the other for the latter album release. I have the original 45 version of this song and it's a little more raw and not as clean sounding. Still a great tune!

Ah, lots of memories. The Austin scene centered around the Vulcan Gas Co., a psychedelic drive on Congress Ave., just twelve blocks from the State Capitol. That place was always cooking (pun intended) with Bubble Puppy, 13th Floor Elevators, Conqueroo, and maybe the Lavender Hill Express, who opened for Janis Joplin whe she played Gregory Gym. Lesser known, but very good bands from South Texas included the Zakary Thaks and Liberty Bell from Corpus Christi and Sweet Smoke from San Antonio.
