You didn't even want me around.
And now I'm back to let you know I can really shake 'em down.
Do you love me?
(I can really move, )
Do you love me?
(I'm in the groove.)
(Do you love me now that I can dance?)
Watch me, now.
(Work, work)
Ah,work it out baby.
(work, work)
Well, you're drivin' me crazy.
(work, work)
With just a little bit of soul, now
(work!)
Now I can mash potatoes, I can do the twist,
Tell me, baby, do you like it like this?
Tell me,
(Tell me,)
Tell me.
Do you love me?
(I can really move, )
Do you love me?
(I'm in the groove.)
Now do you love me?
(Do you love me now that I can dance?)
Watch me, now.
(Work, work)
Ah,work it out baby.
(work, work)
Well, you're drivin' me crazy.
(work, work)
With just a little bit of soul, now
(work!)
Now I can mash potatoes, I can do the twist,
Tell me, baby, do you like it like this?
Tell me,
(Tell me,)
The lyrics of the Buchanan Brothers' song 'Do You Love Me' revolve around the theme of dancing as a means of connecting with someone romantically. The lyrics essentially convey the story of a person who has been rejected by their lover because they cannot dance. The first few lines "You broke my heart cause I couldn't dance, you didn't even want me around" express the hurt and indignation felt by the singer. However, after some time, the singer returns to the ex-lover, now with the ability to "shake 'em down" and asks "do you love me now that I can dance?".
The subsequent lines of the song comprise a plea for affection and attention. The repetition of the lines "Do you love me?" and "Tell me baby, do you like it like this?" reveals the desperation of the singer for acceptance and love, which is predicated on their ability to dance. The lyrics also emphasize the physicality of the dance with lines like "I can really move" and "I'm in the groove."
