The Land of Make Believe
Bucks Fizz Lyrics

Stars in your eyes, little one
Where do you go to dream
To a place, we all know
The land of make believe

Shadows, tapping at your window
Ghostly voices whisper will you come and play
Not for all the tea in China
Or the corn in Carolina
Never, never ever
They're running after you babe

Run for the sun, little one
You're an outlaw once again
Time to change, Superman
He'll be with us while he can
In the land of make believe

Something nasty in your garden's waiting
Patiently, till it can have your heart
Try to go but it won't let you
Don't you know it's out to get you running
Keep on running
They're running after you babe

Run for the sun, little one
You're an outlaw once again
Time to change, Superman
He'll be with us while he can
In the land of make believe

Your world is turning
From night to day
Your dream is burning far, far away

Into the blue
You and I
To the circus in the sky
Captain Kids
On the sand
With the treasure close at hand
In the land of make believe

In the land of make believe

Run for the sun, little one
You're an outlaw once again
Time to change, Superman
He'll be with us while he can
In the land of make believe

Run for the sun, little one
You're an outlaw once again
Time to change, Superman
He'll be with us while he can
In the land of make believe

I've got a friend who comes to tea
And no-one else can see but me
He came today
But had to go
To visit you
You never know

I think your memory is out by a few months, or you are thinking of Making Your Mind Up (or the 2 hits in between).

Rioting hit Toxteth in early July 1981 (Brixton first in April) - but late July media reports of it were restricted so as not to spoil the Charles/Diana wedding (29 July) - but across the country the rioting had ended more or less by then anyway (further Toxteth rioting did clash with the wedding but as I say it was suppressed by the media) - if it lasted into early August at all though it certainly ended completely by then.

I was on holiday in Rhyl (where lots of Scouses go too) in mid August and the police would've been everywhere there if thinking Toxteth was going to spill over to there - nothing happened at all - as ever lots of Scouses were there but they weren't rioting.

anyway this Buck Fizz song was released on 28 November - and it had certainly all ended long before November. also winter 1981 was very cold and set a coldness record at the time - nobody was out rioting in that

(it wasn't from an album released earlier in 1981 to hear it that way in July etc either - the Are You Ready album was in April 1982 so after this single from it)

lastly I started college in 1981 (September) and the newspaper based near to the college would berate us students based merely on the stereotype rather than any actual evidence of wrongdoing - they wouldn't have hesitated to fire an unfounded charge of rioting at us if it was still occurring somewhere in the country by then - and they didn't - female college students being taught about The Pill was their biggest gripe against us actually - well it was 1981 and in a staunch Tory area.

(Count the number of Tory MP's who have got a female student pregnant since 1981)

I remember trekking through heavy snow one Friday in December only to find the college closed by the snow - that was rare in those days hence I still remember it - in fact it was the only time in my own school or college education since 1970 that it happened!
