When We Were Young
Bucks Fizz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Crying softly on to a clean white pillow
Watch the clock as it slowly crawls around
Rolls around
Is she sleeping? no
Is she dreaming?
Time, it passes without that familiar touch
Familiar touch
Love has gone, tears are here, nothing left
Life has changed, remember when we were young

Were young
When we were young
When we were young
When we were young

She pours a coffee and looks in the mirror
Suddenly she’s glad he can’t see her face
Can’t see her face
Youth, it passes while age is collected
Disappears from behind the wires without trace
Without trace

Love has gone, tears are here, nothing left
Life has changed, remember when we were young

Were young
When we were young
When we were young
When we were young

Love has gone, tears are here
Nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing
Life has changed, remember when we were young

Were young
When we were young

When we were young
When we were young...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in "When We Were Young" by Bucks Fizz speak of a person who is reminiscing about a time when they were young and in love. The song sets a nostalgic and melancholic tone as it describes a woman crying softly on a clean white pillow while watching the clock slowly move around. She wonders if she is sleeping or dreaming, but time seems to pass by without the familiar touch of her lover who is no longer present. The image of the clock slowly crawling around represents how time can feel unrelenting and painful when one is mourning for a lost love.

The next verse shows the woman looking in the mirror as she pours a coffee. She is relieved that her former lover cannot see her face. The lyrics express how youth passes by so quickly, and how age seems to collect and disappear behind wires without a trace. The past is long gone, and the present is difficult to accept when one is longing for things that are no longer possible. The chorus repeats several times, emphasizing how love has gone, and there is nothing left but tears. The phrase "remember when we were young" reflects how memory can be both a comfort and a source of pain when one is grieving.

The song speaks of a universal experience that many people go through when they lose someone they love. It captures the feelings of nostalgia, longing, and resentment that come with remembering a time when things seemed easier and happier. The lyrics are poignant and evoke strong emotions, reminding us of the power of love and how its loss can haunt us forever.

The Clock is running for all of Us !

Greetings from a FORGOTTEN TIME, when people work to live and not live to work. When even one certain job was enough, to feed the whole family and joyning live together with your beloved partner, relatives, friends and neighbours. When childs were allowed to be children and not misused as little adults. When we used to meet each other after school, for playing outside.

A time, when we all still had time for ourselves :
Time to endeavor the world, time for love, time to celebrate, time for friendships, time to be creative, time to relax ...
Those were the unforgotten days of of our school yards. When everything seems to be possible.

LIVE IS LIVE !!!

I wish I could turn the clock back - to when I was young! - and make all the kids I was at school with listen to this one. They knew Making Your Mind Up and Land Of Make Believe. (And maybe My Camera Never Lies.) They scoffed when I said Bucks Fizz had released a new song that was quite simply brilliant. It's now 41 years after all that.....and I stand by what I said to my classmates in 1983.....

@robbryant52

If abba had written and produced this song fans would be raving about it ....bucks fizz so underrated but in 2021 people are listening more to eighties music and now getting the recognition they deserve..brilliant group

@metalbearuk

Fantastic song, and they sang the hell out of it. Vastly underrated group.

@susanmowbray4669

Agree xx

@mindegap1

Great song, shit video.

@deaglaniosua

But Bucks Fizz were really big back in 80s so not quite sure how they were "underrated"?

@romfivera

@@deaglaniosuawell it depends on which countries. The band was very little known in France except for their song Making you mind up.

@GullibleMcFly

@@deaglaniosua Are they a household name in 2021? No. So, they could be called underrated now...
