Two albums were released, Buckshot LeFonque (1994) (which featured mostly DJ Premier produced tracks) and the follow up Music Evolution (1997) (which featured mostly Frank McComb on the vocals). Other frequent collaborators were Branford Marsalis' brother, Delfeayo Marsalis and rapper Uptown (of Dope On Plastic fame) aka 50 The Unknown Soldier. Both albums displayed a very broad musical picture, which is probably the reason why they failed to be commercially successful.
The name Buckshot LeFonque was a pseudonym of the jazz saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley.

Better Than I Am
Buckshot LeFonque Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To let my feelings show
In any way that mattered
The moment I felt
She might mean something to me
I would just run away
I felt that love was for the fool
Turn a diamond to simple coal
Because in all my life
I never met that someone to make me feel love was right, alright
[Chorus]
Now I'll do most anything for you
To bring your love
Back into my empty world
You're the only girl I'm thinking of
Though I'll never know why you left this way
I'll try to understand
'Cause the moment you wee in my life
Made me better than I am
Now I see how issues from the past
Can manfest themselves
In your feelings for others
My bitter heart would poison loving souls of those
Who tried to come too close
And then you came into my life
And filled me with the strength
To face the pain inside me
Now that I've given you
The best part of my heart
I see you have your issues too
Your issues too
[Chorus]
Better than I am
I'm better than I am
Though I'll never know why you left this way
I'll try to understand
'Cause the moment you were in my life
Made me better than I am
In Buckshot LeFonque's song Better Than I Am, the artist reflects on his past tendencies to shy away from romance and emotional vulnerability. He acknowledges his fear of love and the false notion that it was foolish, which caused him to run away from any potential romantic connection. He believes that his bitter heart had the power to poison the love of those who came too close to him. However, when the subject of the song entered his life, he was filled with the courage to confront his inner pain and emotional baggage.
He now recognizes that the issues from his past had been impacting his present relationships and that he's not the only one with emotional struggles. He's willing to do anything to bring back the love of his life and realizes that despite his imperfections, their relationship has made him a better person than he was before. The song showcases the power of love to transform an individual, to help them confront their inner demons and grow from the experience.
