DeFranco began his professional career just as swing music and big bands — many of which were led by clarinetists like Artie Shaw, and Benny Goodman — were in decline. While most jazz clarinet players did not adapt to this change, DeFranco successfully continued to play clarinet exclusively, and was one of the few bebop clarinetists.
In 1950, DeFranco spent a year with Count Basie's Septet.
He then led a small combo in the early 1950s which included pianist Sonny Clark and guitarist Tal Farlow.
In this period, DeFranco recorded for MGM Records, Norgran and Verve, the latter two labels were owned by Norman Granz.
He was bandleader of the Glenn Miller Orchestra from 1966 to 1974, under the name, "The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra, Directed By Buddy DeFranco".
He also performed with Gene Krupa, Charlie Barnet, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson and many others, and released dozens of albums as a leader.

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea
Buddy DeFranco Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You've got me in between the devil and the deep blue sea
I forgive you, 'cause I can't forget you
You've got me in between the devil and the deep blue sea
[Repeat: x2]
I ought to cross you off my list
But when you come a-knocking at my door
And I come running back for more
I should hate you, but I guess I love you
You've got me in between the devil and the deep blue sea
You've got me in between the devil and the deep blue sea
The devil and the deep blue sea
In Buddy DeFranco's classic jazz standard "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea," the singer is struggling with a difficult decision. He doesn't want to be with his lover, but at the same time he can't bear the thought of losing them. Hence, he finds himself caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. He forgives his companion because he can't forget about them, which just makes his decision even harder.
The singer admits he should move on from his love affair, but every time his partner comes back into his life, fate seems to intervene and twist his heart, causing him to fall back into the relationship. He should hate them, but love prevails. The devil on his one hand is the temptation that comes with being with his lover, while the deep blue sea symbolizes the fear of losing them forever. The singer is in a predicament and his heart is torn between these two forces, leaving him feeling helpless and trapped, like he's caught between the devil and the deep blue sea.
