Just Friends
Buddy De Franco Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just friends, lovers no more
Just friends, but not like before
To think of what we've been and not to kiss again
Seems like pretending it isn't the ending
Two friends drifting apart
Two friends, but one broken heart
We loved, we laughed, we cried, and suddenly love died

This is the best of deFranco I've ever heard. I would never have believed that he is capable of blowing with so much warmth and emotion. He uses more vibrato here than usually. Farlow is a surprise to me, too, here. He does not so much show off his technique but concentrates more on the music.

One of the very rare (recorded) occasions that you’ll hear Sonny Clark playing the organ. Sonny would, a few years later after returning back East, record his absolute ripper-album “Cool Struttin’. This truly master piece became the standard hard-bop classic of those wonderful Jazz years! Enjoy & Cheers!

DeFranco could really make ballads very special. As a clarinetist myself, I find his version of Stardust to be a pinnacle of technical but beautiful playing.

Much respect for making it a point to include the lineup and year. It always frustrates me when I don't see that right away on a post. Killer date here!

This is the hey day of Tal. What a great tone Tal has here. I love how he moves here. the sound of surprise.
He always sounds better as a sideman. Brilliant and swingin'. This is the way i like to hear Buddy. Just swingin'
And Eugene, love Eugene. These guys are swing monsters and really play together. The recording is soft and unobtrusive
