Guy is known for his showmanship; for example, he plays with drumsticks and walks into the audience whilst playing, the latter being a gimmick he picked up from a local blues guitarist at an early age (joining or leaping into the audience has also long been common in both American popular and gospel music, as in the earlier work of Big Jay McNeely or the Dixie Hummingbirds).
Guy grew up in Louisiana where he learned to play guitar. In the early 1950s he began performing with bands in Baton Rouge. Soon after moving to Chicago in 1957, Guy fell under the influence of "Mighty" Muddy Waters. In 1958 he won a record contract with Artistic Records after beating the West Side guitarists Magic Sam and Otis Rush in a "Head Cutting Contest" at the Blue Flame Club. Soon afterwards he recorded for the Cobra label.
In the early 1960s, Guy was a session guitarist for Chess Records. He recorded on Junior Wells sessions for Delmark Records under the pseudonym Friendly Chap in 1965 and 1966. His career took off during a blues revival period in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and was sparked by Eric Clapton's request that Guy be part of the '24 nights' all-star blues guitar lineup at London's Royal Albert Hall and Guy's subsequent signing with Silvertone Records.

I've been a dog and I've been a tomcat
I chased some tails and I left some tracks
I still know how to have my fun 'cause I'm 74 years young
Got a few good tricks up my sleeve
I know everything that a good woman needs
I'll show Saint Pete just a real good time
When it come to loving, I ain't never done
I'm 74 years young
I've been all around the world, everywhere is home
Drink wine with kings and the Rolling Stones
I got a few scars from the battles I won
'Cause I'm 74 years young
I've been all around the world, everywhere is home
Drink wine with kings and the Rolling Stones
I got a few scars from all the battles I won
I'm 74 years young
74 years young, gonna keep on having fun
When I get to them end of the line
I sure set the [Incomprehensible] real good time
But tonight I feel like I'm 21, I'm 74 years young
When it come to loving, I ain't never done
'Cause I'm 74 years young
When it come to loving, I ain't never done
I'm here to tell you, I said I'm 74 years young
I ain't ever had enough of nothing
74 years young
Buddy Guy's "74 Years Young" is an upbeat and celebratory blues song that pays homage to Guy's longevity and his enjoyment of life. The lyrics suggest that Guy has lived a full life, experiencing a range of adventures and pursuing his passions. Despite his age, he feels youthful and energetic, declaring that he still has plenty of love and fun to give.
The first couple of lines of the song, "I'm 74 years young, there ain't nothing I haven't done, I've been a dog and I've been a tomcat," suggest that Guy's life has been full of exciting and diverse experiences. He has "chased some tails and left some tracks," implying that he has pursued love and passion with the same vigor and determination as a wild animal. Now, as an older man, he still knows how to have fun and enjoy himself.
The lyrics go on to suggest that Guy has made some mistakes along the way, as indicated by his scars from battles he's won, but he's always come out on top. He's traveled the world, had drinks with kings and the Rolling Stones, and amassed a wealth of knowledge about what women need. Guy exudes confidence and charisma, and his words suggest that he has no regrets about his life choices.
Overall, "74 Years Young" is a testament to the power of living life to the fullest, no matter what age you are. It encourages listeners to embrace the joys in life and make the most of every moment.
