Hula Love
Buddy Knox Lyrics
On the isle of Filalilla out Hawai way
A hula maiden gay strolled by a monlit bay
There come a to court her over the water
From a savage Zingazulu land
A Bolo chieftain grand sang her this lay
And he sang
Hulu Hawai hula
Smile on your zing gang a zula
Moon shine above
For you my bolo is swinging
For you my love song I'm singing
Come be my Hula Hula love
But the chieftain from the peaceful Filalilla land
Would not give him her hand
Her lover took his stand
Through the rattle of the battle
As she heard his sweet voice calm and true
They fled in his canoe over water blue
And he sang
Hulu Hawai hula
Smile on your zing gang a zula
Moon shine above
On your sweet jungle love
For you my bolo is swinging
For you my love song I'm singing
Come be my Hula Hula love

Leadbelly was twicer found gulty of lst degree murder. In each case he sang his way out of prison with very affecting performances before a Texas governor and later a Louisiana Governor. As to where Ledbetter got what we now call "Hula Love," there can be no answwer. Huddie was a virtual vacuum cleaner of folk songs, pop songs, field hollers, and all sorts of other Black and even white music. He'd take several of the musical impressions in his head and mix them up into a song. Hewas great, but I actually think Buddy Knox's version is better. My mother and Buddy's mother were first cousins. As a youngster I remember Buddy being at family reunions in Texas.
