Flowers in the Attic
Budgie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The two young children were old and bent
The older tried to look confident
Laying life ebbed away, nearly spent, no love
The darkness came and stopped the precious light
If they survive this eternal night
Without the sun and their maternal love
They might fade away
Flowers in the attic will not grow
Flowers in the attic no one knows
Flowers in the attic given some light
Maybe you will survive

The children cried like a baying hound
Cold, still and darkness was their surround
Although they wept, you could hear no sound
They fade.
They needed light to rejuvenate
To run away through an open gate
To halt the rise of a growing pain, away

By now the old world was laid to rest
So they invented self-happiness
With all the toys and the books
And the games they played
One lonely child in the night touched you

Depending on his mothers will
No food or love were the last but 'til the dawn

Overall Meaning

"Flowers in the Attic" by Budgie is a song that tells the story of two young children who were locked up in an attic, isolated from the world and their mother's love. The song is full of emotions and paints a vivid picture of the children's condition. The first verse describes how the children were old and bent, looking almost like they were already dying. The older child tried to look confident, but the reality was that they were nearly spent, and there was no love to be found. The darkness came and stopped the precious light, and the children were left alone to survive an eternal night. The haunting lyrics suggest that without the sun and maternal love, the children might fade away.

The chorus of the song talks about how flowers in the attic will not grow, and no one knows about it. The children cry out like a baying hound, but even though they wept, no sound could be heard. They fade away, but they needed light to rejuvenate and escape from their darkness. The bridge explains that by then, the old world was laid to rest, and the children invented their own self-happiness. They had books and toys to play with, but it was never enough to replace the love of their mother. The song's last line states that one lonely child in the night touched you, depending on his mother's will, and no food or love were left until the dawn.

was just chatting to my cousin about them... big in Poland though as during the communism you'd buy any album from behind the curtain and well established bands were going first leaving people to the gems like budgie

As a LONG TIME fan of Budgie I always liked Deliver US and just saw it as a natural progression.... I have never understood the dislike for this album. This is one of my fave tracks from it.... I presume it is based on the book by Virginia Andrews.

This was such an awesome piece! Based upon literally genius, the band took the premise and made their take on it. For me, I saw this live and thought this was their peak. Bored with Russia and the rest of the album was epic. This little gem had such a gentle, caring sympathetic feel it made me really want to reach out to those poor beings in the Attic.Undersold as always....
