Everybody`s Wrong
Buffalo Springfield Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Listen to my song
It isn't very long
You'll see before I'm gone
That everybody's wrong

Those of us who run
To catch a moment in the sun
Seem to find the when we're done
That we weren't supposed to run

And there's to many words going down
They keep wringing 'gainst the walls with a hollow sound
All about what it's going to be
Yes, you know what it was you'll see
It ain't payin', you and me not a crown

Finding what you sought
After all the times you've fought
Sometimes leave's you with the thought
That perhaps you just been bought

And there's to many words going down
They keep wringing 'gainst the walls with a hollow sound
All about what it's going to be
Yes, you know what it was you'll see
It ain't payin', you and me not a crown

Finding what you sought
After all the times you've fought

Sometimes leave's you with the thought
That perhaps you just been bought

Overall Meaning

In Buffalo Springfield's Everybody's Wrong, the singer addresses the fallacy of certainty and the dangers of conviction. The lyrics speak to the limits of human knowledge and the dangers of dogmatism. In the opening line, the singer invites the listener to pay attention to the song's message which is that everybody is wrong. The song is a critique of the idea that our beliefs and values are immutable and sacrosanct, and rather highlights the temporary nature of our convictions.

In the second and third stanza, the song highlights the human tendency to pursue fleeting pleasures and the error of chasing after them. The lyric speaks about how we sometimes discover that our preoccupation with such pleasures has led us into situations or outcomes that we had not intended. As a result, we may have to confront the fact that our actions or pursuits have been misguided or even futile. The chorus repeats and asserts that there are too many voices telling stories of what will be, and that we need to be cautious in accepting these beliefs or rhetoric.

The final stanza paraphrases the theme of the song with the idea that even our victories or accomplishments can leave us with the feeling of being compromised or bought. This reminder of our frailty is a warning against arrogance and a call for humility. Overall, Everybody's Wrong offers a message of skepticism, humility, and self-reflection, encouraging a critical and impartial attitude towards knowledge and the belief systems we use to navigate through life.
